More Virex 7.5.1 issues; solution for Adobe conflicts?

CNET staff

We continue to receive varied reports of problems with Virex 7.5.1, but Lou Casagrande echoes Wednesday's story about system instability after installing the utility: "I too had to remove the newest version of Virex. The day after I installed it, I encountered three kernal panic/full-speed fan freezes on my dual 1.8-GHz PM (OS 10.3.6) which required hard restarts. After the third, I suspected and removed Virex and have been quiet and stable since then."

Adobe conflict workaround In response to complaints of issues when using Adobe apps, Mark Tennent writes:

"The solution is the same as with NAV [Norton AntiVirus] so to a certain extent, the problem is Adobe's not NAV or Virex. When background and active virus detection are turned on in Virex, Distiller will make one pdf before ending in a save error. That's one in Distiller 5 and one in Distiller 6. Restarting Classic for some reason allows another pdf in each. The solution is the same as with NAV - turn off the automatic functions in Virex prefs before distilling. Or move to inDesign. Or drop the Postscript file onto Preview then save the pdf from there (if file size too large open in Acrobat and reduce size there)."
