More on Palm Tungsten/Mac OS X 10.2.3 compatibility

Yesterday we reported problems synchronizing Palm Tungsten models under Mac OS X 10.2.3. We've since been flooded with e-mail readers stating that their Tungsten's do work properly under Mac OS X 10.2.3, with an almost equal number reporting the opposite.

Obviously there is some additional factor that is causing the varied reports. For starters, make sure you are using the version of HotSync included on the CD that came with your Tungsten, not from a previous Palm model.

Keyboard drivers David Case, a Senior Systems Engineer at Palm, sent MacFixIt a note suggesting the beta Tungsten keyboard driver as a potential culprit:

"Do these users have the new keyboard driver installed? If so, it seems to block the use of the cradle (and I assume the HotSync cable's) hardware button. Starting HotSync from the application by clicking the on-screen button works.

"To test this out, try moving the keyboard driver to the SD card or deleting it and then reset the Tungsten device and try your sync again."

Bluetooth works Through all of the Tungsten reports we have received, one fact seems evident: Bluetooth synchronization for the Tungsten is virtually flawless under Mac OS X 10.2.3. Axel Grothy writes

"I also have the problem that synchronization with my Tungsten using the USB cradle under Mac OS X 10.2.3 is erratic at best. Sometimes, unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable plus opening of the Conduit Manager prior to cradle synchronization attempts work - but not always.

"However, synchronization using Bluetooth always works, if a bit slower than I would have expected it. I would deduct that it is more a problem with how Mac OS X 10.2.3 handles the USB port than with the Palm software/ hardware itself."

Unplug/re-plug workaround For some users unplugging and replugging the Tungsten cradle, then starting HotSync from the screen on the Palm (instead of using the cradle button) allows proper synchronization.

Other Palm models On a related note, other users report synching difficulty with different Palm models under Mac OS X 10.2.3. One MacFixIt reader writes:

"I'm using a Palm Vx, and since upgrading to 10.2.3, it starts the synch, but hangs at 'Identifying User' and eventually just fails, and quits by itself. No error or notice on the Mac, but the Palm gives an incomplete synch message."
