Macworld attendee reports on Bluetooth and the Mac

Jiro Fujita is at Macworld Expo in Tokyo and sent us this brief report regarding the Bluetooth products:

"One of the iMacs on the floor, running Mac OS X, had a big Bluetooth sign next to it. So I asked the Apple staff nearby if Bluetooth was actually working. They said that they were still waiting for the Bluetooth adapter to arrive. It arrived a short time later. They initially had some trouble getting a cell phone to work with the iMac, but they eventually got it solved.

It was pretty cool to see it work (the performance of PPP over Bluetooth was extremely slow, but that is because of the cell phone system in Japan, not because of the Bluetooth). From what I have seen, while getting Bluetooth to actually work isn't nearly as easy as Apple is claiming, it is certainly no more difficult than getting any other network devices to work. The trick was, if the device doesn't get recognized properly, remove it from the list of paired devices (you can do this from the Bluetooth control panel), and let it search and re-pair the device. That made the Bluetooth cell phone to work properly.

They also had a Sony Clie PalmOS PDA with Bluetooth and a Palm 505 with a Bluetooth Card, but I didn't get to see them sync over Bluetooth. The Bluetooth adapter is so small (no larger than an inch including the USB connector) that I didn't realize it was even there when it was plugged into the keyboard."
