MacFixIt users are reporting a wide variety of issues surrounding Apple's recent update to the Leopard operating system--10.5.7. Although many of these issues may not be widespread, they are possible issues that have surfaced since our users updated their systems. As fixes become available for any of these issues, MacFixIt will be sure to report. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment below this article or send us an e-mail.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to back up your system before doing any software update, but especially when installing a major operating system update.

Entourage not talking to Exchange
MacFixIt user "Charlie" writes:

"The 10.5.7 update breaks synchronization between Entourage and Exchange 2007. I have confirmed this on a number of machines. I first though it was the 12.1 and 12.1.7 Office updates I put on during the same round of updates. But I freshly installed Office after removing all turds and the problem still happens with 12.0.0 on Mac OS 10.5.7. I guess Microsoft didn't do much testing of Apple's updates during the seeding period...d'oh!"

Adobe Acrobat update not working
Adobe has updated its Acrobat Reader software to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.7. However, as MacFixIt reader "Ron R." relates:

"I can't seem to get Acrobat to run since installing Mac OS X 10.5.7. I've installed the patch put out today (Acro 9.1.1) and that didn't seem to help. I reinstalled the application from disk. No help. This is running on a iMac."

Possible fix
"Ron R." later writes in to tell us how he solved this issue.

1. Uninstall your previous version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
2. Download the updated version of the software from Adobe and install it, version 9.1.1.

Corel Painter 11 not working properly
MacFixIt reader "Christopher A." writes:

"I have updated to 10.5.7 and now Corel Painter 11 is completely broken. I reinstalled and deleted prefs. Still broken. I was using it before the update same day."

MacBook Pro not sleeping when closed
MacFixIt reader "Nate G." reports:

"This was the first disastrous update for me. When I closed my MacBook Pro it did not go to sleep, the backlight was still on, and the machine was frozen with no cursor. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. I tried zapping PRAM and deleting caches to no effect. In the end I had to go back to a 10.5.6 Super Duper clone of my disk. My wife, also with a MacBook Pro, is not having this problem.  One other person on Macintosh reported a similar problem."

iMac kernel panic after update
MacFixIt user "K.J." writes:

"I downloaded the 10.5.7 update through the software update application and let it install on my late 2008 24-inch iMac. The system asked to be rebooted and I confirmed. It then started the installation on shutdown as per usual. Upon completion of installation a message popped up stating the download was corrupt or damaged. The Mac immediately rebooted and came back up to the white screen with the Apple logo. It then went to the gray screen with a kernel panic and a power button icon in the middle of the screen with a message asking me to reboot the system. I did and every time it reboots into the kernel panic screen. Darn! Sour apples again."

Little Snitch 2.1.1 causing hangs after log-in
MacFixIt user "Scott B." reports:

"I dropped you a line last night about getting hungup AFTER login (the "space" screen) in 10.5.7.  Apparently this is being caused by the latest version of Little Snitch (2.1.1 and nightly builds since) that was released the day before 10.5.7. I didn't pick up on it because there was no restart until 10.5.7 was installed.  See one of multiple threads here: http://forums.obdev.at/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2739"

Possible fix
Try installing the latest nightly build from Little Snitch. If that does not work, see if you experience the issues after uninstalling Little Snitch.

Finder apparently frozen after update
MacFixIt reader "Matt E." writes:

"So I went through the whole update process and now when my computer boots I can't open anything, move anything. Basically I can do nothing. Sometimes I can open the hard drive, but I can't open anything beyond that. I can't move any files, even to just a new position on the desktop. Basically, it's useless."

Again, these are issues that our readers are experiencing and writing in about. These issues could very well be local to their individual machines, but other people may be experiencing the same or similar issues. If you had one of these issues and fixed it, or would like to confirm that the issue is wider spread than a single user, please feel free to comment on this article or send us an e-mail.
