More device problems solved by updating drivers/firmware As we've repeatedly noted, many problems with external devices after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8 can be resolved by simply updating drivers or firmware.

MacFixIt reader  Jean-Luc Warin offers another case example:

"I had a full crash of system at startup of USB external device under 10.4.8 Using Elgato TV 2.3.1 and Cynergy 2 DTT TV USB module Updating Ipevo Skype phone driver to version 1.0.2.8 solves the problem."

For more on these issues, see the "external devices" section of our special report.

More on problems with closed-lid functions Meanwhile, users continue to report issues with closed-lid portable functions.

MacFixIt reader Daniel writes:

"I don't know if this is related to the other closed-lid problem, but since updating my MacBook Pro to 10.4.8, I get a solid blue screen every time I disconnect my DVI-to-Video adapter.  I have to force a shutdown to get my computer back."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Foldershare issues Finally, some users are reporting issues with Foldershare -- a tool to share and sync folders across multiple computers -- has a few issues under Mac OS X 10.4.8.

"We've found that installing the 10.4.8 update breaks foldershare.  Foldershare stops with an error message that it can not initialize SSL."
