File sharing issues

Restarting file sharing services to see non-boot drives We previously noted a problem where sharing issue where non-boot volumes do not show up when connecting to the Mac sharing those volumes.

MacFixIt reader Tito reports that restarting file sharing services sometimes resolves this issue:

"After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3.5 I discovered that my FireWire volume was not visible to other Macs. I've been using it for months without a glitch... and suddenly it was not visible. Restarting the Macs didn't help. However, restarting the File Sharing service on the "server" Mac that has the FireWire drive connected to it solved the problem."

Restarting file sharing services can be accomplished by opening System Preferences, clicking the "Sharing" pane, then clicking "Stop" Personal File Sharing. Wait a few seconds for the services to stop, and then press "Start."

Multiple attempts required to see servers in some cases For users having problems with OS X's Network Browsing feature (accessible via Connect to Server's Browse button, or directly via Go -> Network in the Finder), multiple repeated attempts may be the solution in some cases.

MacFixIt reader Andrew writes "I've had this problem as well, for quite awhile. I'll browse the network view of the finder and no servers show up. To deal with it, I've found that if I open the window over and over, five or ten times, eventually the server will pop up where it's supposed to be."

As previously noted, entering the desired server's IP address in the "Connect to Server" window usually allows access to machines that do not show up in Network Browse mode.
