As reported yesterday, Mac OS X 10.1.4 is out. In addition to its availability via Software Update, you can now also get it here.

Here are the highlights of initial reader feedback on the new update:

Partial sound loss Chuck Douglas reports that the error alert sounds in Project Builder no longer occur after updating to Mac OS X 10.1.4. Sound is otherwise fine overall, as normal system alert sounds still occur. Actually, we have had a similar occurrence in GoLive 6.0, except it started after the recent OS X Security Update.

Another Norton Utilities kernel panic? We already had reports of Norton Utilities triggering kernel panics in OS X 10.1.3. Jesus Repetto found that he started getting them only after updating to 10.1.4. It occurred right after entering his password at login. Removing SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext from the System>Library>Extensions folder eliminated the panic.

Symantec has replied in general, as regards to the 10.1.4 update: "At this time we have not detected any major issues with Mac OS X 10.1.4. This update for Mac OS X deals primarily with security issues and updates for supported media types. This should not have an impact on Norton Utilities functionality."

ViaVoice problem? After installing Mac OS X 10.1.4 and the Microsoft IntelliType Pro X 3.0.0 driver a reader found that his Via Voice OS X program stopped working.

Update: Bob LeVitus has all three of these components but has had no problems with ViaVoice.

Derek Minus did have a similar problem. He writes: "However, I was able to reactivate ViaVoice after examining the console log and discovering that the program was unable to open my userID. I reestablished ID via the personal assistant and dictated new speech patterns."

Font Reserve problem? Ketan Vakil states: "Upon installing 10.1.4 and restarting, Font Reserve 3.0 no longer activates fonts in programs. If one displays an activated font within the browser, the font just shows as generic."

Update: Chris Basnight begs to differ, at least when using Quark XPress from Classic: "Font Reserve is auto-activating fonts in Quark 4.1 just fine after updating to 10.1.4. FR 3.0 does not auto-activate fonts for OSX native applications at all, regardless of the version of the OS."

GeeThree Port problem? Oliver Ullmann found that his GeeThree Stealth Serial Port no longer worked with his G4/466 after updating to 10.1.4.

Update: Bruce Gee (President of GeeThree) replies: "Indeed, after you run the installer from Apple, it appears to change the settings for the serial port. But if you run the Stealth OS X installer again, things should work just fine."

As a reader pointed out, this was true for prior OS updates as well. See this page.

Explorer is the default again Several users report that Internet Preferences default back to Internet Explorer after installing OS X 10.1.4. However, it is more likely that the direct cause is downloading the new Explorer 5.1.4 update.

Update: Several readers confirm that the cause of this on their systems was (a) updating OmniWeb and/or (b) updating to OS X 10.1.4. Updating Explorer was not the critical factor. We can at least confirm that after updating to 10.1.4, we were once again asked (at browser launch) if we wanted Explorer to be our default browser.
