Okay, I am feeling a bit sheepish. After posting an item yesterday on problems with an iMac mounting certain types of CD, including citing my own instance of this problem, reader Ed Travis reminded me of the recently posted iMac DVD-ROM Update 1.0. It is designed specifically to fix this sort of problem. I had never gotten around to installing it.
