iTunes 7.0.2 (#9): Video stutter; iPod-stored Podcast display problems (cont.); more

Video stutter We previously reported on issues with video stuttering (usually with media purchased from the iTunes Store) in conjunction with iTunes 6.0. The stutter continue for many users of iTunes 7.0.x, lending credence to the notion that this is not an iTunes-specific issue, but rather an issue with QuickTime, which iTunes uses for video playback.

One reader writes:

"I have had problems with TV shows that I have downloaded with iTunes 7.0.1. The video stutters which makes watching said shows really annoying. I have some shows that I downloaded and watched with iTunes 6.x and they were fine. I am using a 12" PowerBook with 1.2 gigs of memory with Tiger on it. I tried upgrading to 7.0.2 hoping it would help and while it did improve the playback it did not fix it."

Despite potentially being a QuickTime-related issue, stuttering can sometimes be resolved by opening the videos in QuickTime Player. As such, there may simply be a problem with iTunes' use of the QuicKTime playback engine, rather than with the engine itself.

You can open videos displayed in iTunes with the QuickTime Player via the following method:

  1. Press Command-R to reveal the movie file in the Finder
  2. Press Command-O to open the movie file in its default creator, QuickTime Player

iPod-stored Podcast display problems (cont.) Meanwhile, we continue to report on an issue where podcasts do not properly display in iTunes when stored on some iPods.

Tom Dager writes:

"I will load my podcasts onto my iPod Mini and they will show there. However as soon as I plug it back into iTunes, it changes the podcasts into a playlist.  This is getting to be really frustrating to say the least."

Another reader adds:

"I am experiencing the same issue with podcasts and the G3 iPod.  Can only see the podcast if it is in a playlist.  No way to delete the podcast from the iPod that I can find.  It can be deleted from the playlist, but is still on the iPod's drive and can not be found to be deleted."

More on persistent re-launching MacFixIt reader Luther offers another tip for a previously reported issue where iTunes 7.0.x persistently re-launches.

Luther writes:

"What I've found is that when you quit iTunes, let it quit before doing anything else. If you give it a few more moments to completely quit, before switching to anything else, it quits and stays quit. If you initiate a quit then switch away to do something else, it comes straight back."
