iTunes 2: some good news: iTunes as a CD music recovery tool; iTunes and Radio Tuner

Almost lost in the bad publicity for iTunes 2 that followed its "data loss" bug disaster is some good news about the update:

iTunes 2 as a CD music recovery tool Kris Kunze writes (he specifically refers to the OS X version, but we suspect it would apply to both):

"I have been astonished at the ability of iTunes 2 (OS X) in conjunction with my iBook combo drive to rip music from extremely damaged audio CDs. These CDs look more like colanders than CDs when you hold them up to the light; some have hundreds of small holes, others have holes a few millimeters wide where the silver coating on top has flaked off. No other hardware will play these CDs, either skipping continuously or simply refusing to play at all.

I have resurrected CDs that I gave up on years ago, and although I am a complete pig with my CDs I have been unable to find a CD that iTunes won't rip.

I would advise anyone with damaged CDs and an iBook combo drive to temporarily change their import preferences in iTunes to AIFF instead of MP3 and to burn copies of their mishandled CDs."

Radio Tuner working in iTunes 2 If you were having problems with iTunes Radio Tuner not working (see previous item), it seems to be fixed in iTunes 2.

Update: Jeff Herscovitz suggests that there may still be problems here: "For me, most of the Jazz and Smooth Jazz links are still incorrect or dead. The status window hangs on Getting Playlist or Connecting. Some Pop and Rock links work, but, in general, most do not." We tried this and can confirm Jeff's findings.
