Other applications finding/using images Users continue to report issues with other applications (including components of Mac OS X) locating and using image folders in iPhoto 5.0.x libraries.

MacFixIt reader Stewart Beels reports issues accessing photo libraries through the Desktop and Screen Saver pane of System Preferences:

"I have noticed that my other iLife apps and the System Preference Desktop and Screen Saver will not recognize my iPhoto pictures if they reside on my external 300 GB Firewire hard drive. Moved them to the boot drive and everything is fine. I can not determine if it is a Firewire hard drive issue or solely an iPhoto issue."

Philip Lamb reports a nearly identical issue:

"I am experiencing a problem with iPhoto 5.0.x. The problem relates to choosing my desktop background. As you know, when selecting a photo to use as your desktop background, you have the option of selecting a folder containing many photos and OS X will 'automatically' change the desktop background picture after a set period of time. You can choose the timeline and whether to alternate photos in order or randomly.

T"his feature worked great until I loaded the recent update to iPhoto (5.01). The only folders available for "change picture" are the folders I created before the update. All folders created after the update show up on the list, but when I select them, the option to 'change picture' is grayed out, and thus unavailable."

Deleting the Library for crashing problems We previously reported that some users had success resolving launching/crashing issues with iPhoto 5.0.x by rebuilding the iPhoto library (hold down both the option and command keys while starting up the application).

Now MacFixIt reader Dan Timoldi reports that he actually had to delete his entire iPhoto library, then restore the images from a backed up source, in order to resolve similar issues.

Dan writes:

"One needs to burn their photos to a CD or DVD, and then quit and delete the iPhoto Library in the pictures folder, then launch iPhoto and drag the photos from the CD or DVD into the library. This seems to be a more through recreation of the Library than holding down the option and command keys. I'm not able to create books; however, it still crashes and even if it doesn't crash, it will loose text typed into books in-between restarts of iPhoto. "
