Iomega Jaz power supply recall "reminder"

Iomega Jaz power supply recall "reminder"

CNET staff
Iomega issued a partial recall of Jaz power supplies back in 1999 (see previous coverage). Earlier this week, Drew Matich received an email from Iomega about the same recall. We suspect the new mailing is because of the user incident described in the email. It states:

In early 1999, Iomega discovered a potential safety hazard in the Jaz power supply, which shipped with some Jaz drives in late 1998 and early 1999. The affected power supply could separate and expose internal electronics, which could potentially cause harm to someone handling the power supply unit.

In response to this issue, Iomega engaged, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other applicable regulatory agencies, in a worldwide recall of this power supply. In February 1999, we notified all known users, resellers and distributors, and requested that they contact Iomega immediately for replacement.

Recently a Jaz user experienced a shock from one of the units that was not returned. We are concerned that more of these potentially defective power supply units may not have been returned. Consequently, we once more encourage all Jaz customers who purchased Jaz drives after 1998 to visit out Web site or call Iomega to determine if the power supply provided with your drive was part of the recall and should be replaced.
