Internet Explorer and Outlook Express: miscellaneous matters

BofA cookies fix Quico Gonzalez had the problem of being unable to access the Bank Of America web page, even after installing IE 4.5.1 (see previous related item). Deleting all of the BofA-related cookies fixed the problem.

Outlook Express duplicate address glitch Larry Beck reports that, after upgrading to Outlook Express 5.0.1, "when I attempt to add a new address to my address book, it duplicates an existing address instead of adding the new one. The result is that there are two identical addresses, neither of them being the new one I want to create. If I delete one of the identical addresses, they both disappear! If I attempt to change one to the correct new address, it changes both of them. This happened to me on two different Macs."

Update: Bill Hakes writes: "Here's how to fix this: Back up your old identity. Then, export address book to a text file. Delete duplicates in a text editor and save. In OE 5.01, delete all addresses. Quit. Do a complex rebuild so that you end up with an empty address book. Import the fixed text file. Everything should now work." Chris Culbertson offered a similar suggestion.

Degree symbol problem? Jeff Wahl reports that Outlook Express would save a message to the Drafts folder but then won't open it if it has the degree symbol (Option-Shift-8) in the message. He tested this with a message that had nothing but the degree symbol as the text. However, when I just tested this myself, I did not have this problem.

First Run glitch? David Kilbridge describes a problem that may occur when installing the Outlook Express and Internet Explorer 128-bit Internet Update. It appears to leave an older version of the First Run application on your drive, while sending the new version to the Trash. This implies that if First Run is run for any reason, you would revert to the older versions of the software. The solution is to remove the trashed First Run file (David found it in the Rescued Items folder after a restart) and move it to the "Microsoft Internet Self-Repair" folder, replacing the older version there.

Online banking problem Richard Trueman writes: "I installed all the 128 bit 4.5.1 upgrade over a secure 4.5 and the version number did not change. I then went to test it with mbanx Canada. Although I was able to get a secure connection to their front page, upon entering my numbers and password, I was directed to a screen that posted this message:

We have recently been experiencing difficulties with Internet Explorer for Macintosh and our online banking application. We have been working diligently, including seeking assistance from Microsoft and Apple to find a fix to these issues. Unfortunately, neither Apple nor Microsoft has been able to provide a solution to date. Until such a time that a fix has been found by Microsoft or Apple, we request that our Macintosh clients please use the Netscape Browser for online banking purposes.
