We continue to track the compatibility of various PowerPC-coded applications running under the Rosetta environment utilized by Intel-based Macs.

The entire list of working and non-working applications can be found in our comprehensive Rosetta Compatibility index.

More problems with Microsoft Office 2004 We previously reported an issue where Office 2004 11.2.x freezes upon quit when running under Rosetta on Intel-based Macs.

Users now report similar freezes when attempting to save files in some cases.

MacFixIt reader Charlie Nancarrow writes:

"When saving files, Word 2004 displays the progress of the save in the Status bar at the bottom of the document window and then it hangs. The beachball of death comes up and then you will notice periodic disk activity every 2 seconds or so.

"If you have any other programs open (such as Safari or Entourage etc) they will often quit unexpectedly during this time.

"This problem has been confirmed on multiple systems, either running all the latest updates or not. That is the latest updates for Office (11.2.3) or the Mac OS (10.4.5 etc) do not correct or affect the problem.

"Looking at activity viewer and in the system logs and console, shows that ATSS (Apple's Type system daemon) quits unexpectedly and any program relying on that service will also tend to quit.

"The repeated disk activity while this hang is happening is the ATSS service relaunching itself repeatedly. And/or the Finder relaunching repeatedly.

"It seems to be happening only when using older documents (does not seem to affect newly created files)."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.
