Intel-based Macs: Problems with printers (#3)

We continue to receive reports from readers who have issues with printing on their Intel-based Macs.

The most problematic area continues to be printing through AirPort Base Stations -- a function that seems to be broken for several devices in the Intel version of Mac OS X.

MacFixIt reader Ashley Buckle describes an issue with a direct USB connection to an Epson laser printer:

"My Epson Acculaser C1100 was previously working flawlessly connected via USB to my G5 iMac (the model before the one with built-in camera). Last week I connected it via USB to the 20 inch Intel iMac, and although it was instantly recognized and the correct printer drivers seemed in place, printing to it is impossible: jobs remain in the queue forever, with no indication from the printer that it has received anything, or any communication error. Reinstalling the latest drivers from the epson site doesn't fix the problem."

Claudia Brak's case falls in the more common AirPort throughput failure category.

Claudia writes:

"I have an Epson C900 laser printer which is available via AirPort Express. With my Powerbook G4 (10.4.4) it works fine, but the Intel iMac reports a communication error."

If you are having problems with a printer connected to an Intel-based Macs, your first course of action should be to check the manufacturer's Web site for updated Intel-native drivers. Canon is among the manufacturers to have already release such a driver.

Next, try opening Printer Setup Utility (located in Applications/Utilities), then deleting and re-adding your device.
