iLife '06 DVD (#2): Dual-Layer; Problems with installation package

iLife '06 a dual-layer DVD The iLife '06 DVD is dual-layer, making it impossible for some users (without dual-layer drives) to burn a backup copy of the disc.

MacFixIt reader Sam writes:

"I got my copy of iLife '06 and went to make a backup copy of the installation DVD. Toast informed me that it's a dual layer disc. Since I do have a dual layer burner installed, Toast was able to create a copy which I subsequently was able to use to install the software. But I'm unsure how people without dual layer burners will be able to make a backup copy. I think this is the first time I've encountered a dual layer DVD software installation disk."

Problems with installation package Some users report issues with the iLife '06 installation package.

MacFixIt reader Rob Lee writes:

"I just got iLife 06 DVD yesterday but I can't install it. I have a relatively new dual 2 GHz PowerMac G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.4.4.

"The iLife install DVD has a read me file (no problem opening that) but the icon for iLife itself isn't a regular icon. When I click on that icon, my Mac says that there is no default application to open it. I did a get info on the icon and it has a "mpkg" extension, which I don't recognize, nor does my Mac."

This problem may actually be an be an issue with .mpkg files in Mac OS X 10.4.4

As such, you may want to try using a utility like Pacifist to force an installation of the software.

One you have downloaded and launched Pacifist, click the "Open Package" button, then locate and open the iLife installation .pkg file. Click the lock and enter your administrator password, then click the "Install" button.
