iChat AV: Problems with multi-person video chats (#2)

CNET staff

We continue to report on issues with multi-person video chats from within iChat AV -- with the program mistakenly stating that system requirements are not met, or otherwise failing to initiate the chat.

We previously reported that the first thing to try in these cases is a basic set of maintenance tasks (in particular, cleaning of caches) with a utility like Cocktail, and checking for router conflicts as described in this article.

MacFixIt reader Michael Holmes now reports that simply restarting iChat or first initiating a multiple-person audio chat may also work to resolve the issue.

Michael writes:

"I too have had problems with multi-person video chats. Invariably it has been a problem of a lack of bandwidth or iChat's perception of a lack of bandwidth.

"I have been able to solve the problem by having the buddy with the missing multiple camera icon restart iChat. Most of the time that is sufficient. Occasionally on restart iChat would still not allow a multi-person video chat but would allow a multi-person audio chat. Starting up a multi-person audio chat, iChat seems to remember to allow a multi-person video chat and upon closing the audio chat I was able to start a multi-person video chat."
