HP JetDirect firmware upgrade needed for older HP printers

Based on information received from Hewlett-Packard Tech Support, Dan O'Donnell describes a firmware conflict between certain older printers and Mac OS 8.5.x:

Older Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4, 4 , and related printers - with the HP JetDirect J2552A Card - may have a JetDirect firmware version A.03.03. This firmware is not compatible with Mac OS 8.5.x. The solution is to upgrade the firmware to A.05.05, but this can only be accomplished from a Windows or Unix machine, across the network. The driver update packages live at the HP web site. To check the version of firmware currently resident, you need to print a Configuration Page for your printer.
