We received numerous reader replies to yesterday's item on the HP DeskJet 900 Series USB 3.0.2 update. Most confirmed and extended the initial report: Charles Maurer writes: "We have had frequent printing errors. Usually the first n pages of a document will print correctly but then a page does not. In addition, dragging a file onto the desktop printer does not cause the document to be printed. HP's web site makes a big deal of the fact that the desktop printer can be shared. However, it turns out that this is only under Windows." Update: Dale Bottrell adds: "I don't know how this person is trying to share the printer. But it can only be done using an external JetDirect printserver. Sharing via USB is impossible as the Mac OS does not support that over USB." Brian Hemmings writes: "The new driver does fix some bugs in the previous version, notably the ability to print more than one copy of double sided pages when in duplex mode. However, it has introduced bugs where there were none before. In Quark 3.32, any pictures on a page now do not print, a blank hole is left with a cross through it. In Quark 4.1, pages are not rendered accurately, they are scaled to about 90 percent vertically and 96 percent horizontally. Printing in both these applications with the previous driver 2.0a gives good results. The new driver has introduced the ability to preview before printing, although the OK button to actually print is missing in the Preview window. Frans van der Geest confirms: "I also had the problem of output being scaled down using the 3.02 driver." Frank van Dijk found that his problems with the driver (connected to an iBook running Mac OS 9.0.2) were solved by turning off background printing.
