HP 3.2 driver: preferences not saved; other problems noted

Not everyone is pleased with the HP 3.2 printer driver (see previous MacFixIt coverage): Jim Phelps writes: "You cannot save preferences settings for the printer driver. The default settings always pop-up (Plain Paper, Color, Normal Output). You have to go through three different tabs or menus to reset these values each time you print. Also, according to the manual; you can have a Watermark printed on your pages. This is not true. You cannot print a Watermark on your pages." This is true for both the 3.0.2 driver and the 3.2 driver, as confirmed by HP Support: Currently, there is no "save settings" feature in any 3.x driver versions. The Watermark feature was only available on the "DeskJet 900 Series" driver (versions 2.x), and is not on the "HP DeskJet" driver (versions 3.x) Charles Maurer adds: "The new driver doesn't fix the perpetual, premature warning of low ink (see previous item). Nor does it permit sharing printers, as the Windows drivers do. Nor does it permit saving preferences." Marc Schmitt reports: "This update caused major problems with my HP 970cxi: 1) The duplex unit is not recognized anymore, no matter what I do; 2) In Draft mode, pictures and text will be dithered in pretty big pixels. Even 10 point letters become hard to read."
