Graphic distortion (tiny white dots) in Dock icons, other icons, menubars (#2)

CNET staff

We continue to cover an issue where graphic distortion appears in various icons, particularly in the Dock or on the Desktop. Other users report manifestation of the issue in the menubar. Again, here's an image of the problem:

We've now identified some potential fixes for the issue.

Potential Fixes

Reset Appearance Some users have reported that using the shareware utility Onyx to reset appearance/Dock settings eliminates the appearance of this visual distortion until a restart is performed.

This can be accomplished by simply launching Onyx, navigating to the appearance pane, then the Dock section, and pressing the "Apply" button. You may need to also press "Apply" in the Finder section and others depending on where you are seeing the problem.

Replace graphics card Unfortunately, some users are finding that they need to replace their graphics card before this problem disappears.

MacFixIt reader Craig Hein writes:

"I too had this problem appear on an original G5 2x2 with an ATi 9600 (stock) running Tiger. It first appeared in the dock and on some jpegs, and then began to appear throughout World of Warcraft. Completely erased and reinstalled my System. No change, and eventually it got so bad that I purchased a new 9600 from OWC. For me at least, it was a hardware failure - hope your users have better luck.
