GoBar runs slow on a Palm IIIc; Aladdin replies

Gerald Wilson writes: "Aladdin's GoBar 2.5 for Palm OS runs very slow on a Palm IIIc. It takes nearly a second to draw each icon."

We asked Aladdin for comments about this and they replied:

"On Palm IIIc's but not on Prism's of grayscale devices, a straight implementation of our redraw routines result in the appearance of a white box surrounding a sizable portion of the icons (as if someone had made the icon's mask layer extend beyond the icon itself on a Mac). Early in the development of GoBar 2.5 this was deemed decidedly unattractive and code was added to address it. As many IIIc users have found, this resulted in a noticeable increase in how long it takes GoBar to redraw the screen when scrolling a folder/category or switching between them. We had hoped to improve the speed as development continued and though we were somewhat successful the speed of redraws on IIIc's is still slower than other units.

In an effort to be responsive to our users we are working on a minor update which will give IIIc users back the speed though this will also bringing back the white space around some 3rd party icons. At this time we do not have a date but are working to release it as quickly as practical."

Update: Eric Johnston found: "It's not just the Palm IIIc that GoBar 2.5 runs slow on. It crawls on my Visor Prism, which has the fastest processor available in any Palm OS device. It renders the unit basically unusable."
