Getting Deep Sleep to work with Adaptec SCSI card in OS X

CNET staff
As we have noted here before, the version of the Adaptec 2930 SCSI card that ships with Apple's G4 computers does not yet support "deep sleep" in OS X (e.g., the system fan remains on). According to Richard Bottiglieri, Adaptec told him that a driver that supports deep sleep is coming soon. Meanwhile, he found a work-around:

"I booted into OS 9 (although you could probably also do this as a root user in OS X), and I went into the System\Library directory. I created a folder named 'Extensions (Disabled).' In that folder, I moved all items from the Extensions folder having anything to do with SCSI drivers (essentially, anything that had Adaptec or SCSI in its name). After that, I rebooted in OS X and deep sleep worked." [Note: Two more readers have now confirmed this works.]

Of course, this only works if you do not intend to use your SCSI card in OS X. It will still work in OS 9, if needed. Or you could re-enable the extensions for occasional use in OS X.

Update: Actually, it appears that it is only necessary to remove files with the word Adaptec in their name. Additionally removing files with the word SCSI is not only not necessary but may cause problems. For example, Jonathan Ballard informs us that removing the SCSI files somehow prevented his iPod from being recognized by the Mac.
