Freeverse's Eclipse/Othello/Reversi and IOS

CNET staff
As long-time readers may recall, I have a special fondness for the game of Othello (also known as Reversi). So it was with more than casual interest that I stopped by Freeverse's booth at last month's Macworld Expo to check out their version of this game, called Eclipse. Having now played it for several weeks, I can assure you that, at its highest levels, it is a very strong opponent. Overall, it is the best Othello game for the Mac that I have seen. But perhaps its best feature is that it can connect with IOS (Internet Othello Server). From here, you can play against other opponents - and view the game via Eclipse's graphical interface. And if there are no other humans on the server when you drop by, don't worry. The server appears to be permanently stocked with a collection of computer opponents - that include some of the absolute toughest to be beat computers you are ever likely to meet. If you like Othello, be careful about logging on to IOS or you will soon find yourself going back for "just one more game" until you have spent the entire day there. [Note: Freeverse also makes several other games, including Hearts Deluxe and Spades Deluxe.]
