Fixing problems with Retrospect 4.3; Dantz replies

After upgrading to Retrospect 4.3, Scott Rose found that the updated application would freeze at the start of each backup attempt (using an SCSI-2 PCI card connected to a tape drive): "It would look like it was 'locating' the tape or sometimes even starting to 'copy,' but it would never get beyond that. It just sat there, for hours, doing nothing. I reinstalled Retrospect 4.2 - and immediately everything worked properly again." Scott contacted Dantz about this and they replied: "We made drastic changes to Retrospect's Fast & Wide SCSI support in Retrospect 4.3. This resulted in major speed increases for users with fast SCSI cards, but it can also bring out already-existing problems that may not have asserted themselves before because of Retrospect's limited speed with these cards. To test for this, go to the Retrospect Directory, click Special, then Option-click Preferences. Choose the HW Compatibility Options group. Check "Disable Fast and Wide SCSI," quit Retrospect, relaunch, and try again. If you still have the same problem, you may be best off with Retrospect 4.2. If the problem goes away after checking this option, SCSI troubleshooting is in order. Try: (1) Update the drivers for your SCSI card; (2) Try the card in a different PCI slot; (3) Try a different cable from the Mac to the tape drive; etc."
