Finder Freezes: another utility that may help

CNET staff
Following up on our report from last time on Finder freezes, John Melby has written a utility called Fix Finder Files. It works in a similar manner to Boot, You Bastard!, with the primary differences that:
  1. One does not have to boot from the problem disk to use it, since the utility prompts for the location of the destination System Folder.
  2. It also can be used simply to quit and then re-launch the Finder.

Update Several readers have suggested that you may cure the freeze by just pulling the Finder out of the System Folder and putting the very same Finder back in. This updates the boot blocks. Corruption of the boot blocks may ultimately be the cause of some of these problems. I'll try it next time.

Update Brian Aslakson suggests that simply double-clicking the System file should similarly update the boot blocks. Doing this has the bonus benefit of checking for potential System file damage (an error message will likely appear if the System file is damaged - although beware of the false error message associated with using Appearance Extension 1.0.2, as reported here before).
