Entourage 2004: Problems generating attached-file messages from iPhoto, fixes

CNET staff

We previously reported a problem where when attempting to e-mail an image contained in iPhoto using the 'Mail' button that connects you automatically to Entourage, the attachment shows as: 'Attachment ([document name].669' and has a file size of '0.0K'. The issue also affects other applications with similar functionality, including PDF U.

For instance, MacFixIt reader M F Muniz Neto writes "I had iPhoto e-mail client set to Entourage X. Now, I'm using 2004, but when I click on iPhoto Entourage icon, it opens a new e-mail, but with no correct attachment. It is a 0kb attachment, with an extension .669...it works perfect with Apple's Mail.app."

Several readers have since reported that using the iPhoto Mailer Patcher, which is intended to add support for Claris Emailer, Mailsmith, Outlook Express, PowerMail and QuickMail Pro to iPhoto's automatic e-mail attachment function, resolves the issue.

Meanwhile a poster to Apple's Discussion boards reports that you can use a shareware utility like Pacifist to open the iPhoto .pkg file, then locate the file located at /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources/Scripts/Microsoft/Entourage.scpt, and modify the following text as follows:

  • make new attachment at new_message with properties {file:(this_imagefile as alias)}

changed to

  • make new attachment at new_message with properties {file:(this_imagefile_path)}

If you have success with either of these workarounds (note that some users are inherently able to send images using this method without either fix), please drop us a line at late-breakers@macfixit.com.
