With the advent of non-OS 9 booting Macs came the de function of some applications' installers that will only run when a system is started from Mac OS 9. These include Corel's Bryce 4.x (required to run the purchased-download 5.0 updater) and Roxio's original Toast Titanium 5.0.x disks.
Fortunately, developers are coming up with some interesting solutions for customers affected by the problem. Peggy Berk lets us know that Corel will provide users of Bryce 4.x who purchased the downloadable upgrade to version 5.x with a serial number that turns the updater into a full install:
"Corel has also come up with a very workable solution to this problem - if they have your earlier Bryce version registered and you provide the 5.0 upgrade version serial number to them over the phone, they immediately give you a new serial number for 5.0 that will turn the upgrade into a full install.... very simple and very easy... once you figure out who to call (not tech support, but customer service)."
Some other developers are charging for updated disks that can install in Classic mode or under Mac OS X.
