Apple has released a daylight saving time update for Mac OS X that will bring systems up-to-date with new standards going into effect this year. Apple's description reads:

"The Daylight Saving Time Update for Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server addresses recent changes in the way Daylight Saving Time will be observed in the U.S. and Canada beginning in March 2007 and includes the latest time zone information for the rest of the world."

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Tiger edition of this update requires Mac OS X 10.4.8, meaning users who have chosen to stick with an earlier iteration of the OS because of issues introduced in 10.4.8 will be stuck with incorrect time zones.

As described by MacFixIt reader Arne Berglund:

"I'm a bit disappointed in how Apple has implemented this. I'm still running 10.4.7 on my MacBook Pro due to frequent Airport drops on the WPA2 wireless here at work. (10.4.7 is solid, 10.4.8 drops several times daily.) Apple's new patches require 10.4.8. While I can understand that for the Security Patch, for the Daylight Savings patch that seems unnecessary. Now I have to make a choice - correct time zones or reliable wireless connection."

UPDATE 2: Note that daylight savings time rule changes for the United States and Canada are already available in Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later. Other regions (including Australia, Brazil, the province of Alberta, Canada and several others) are affected by this February, 2007 Daylight Saving Time Update. Despite this fact, however, Apple says "You should install these updates even if your computer is used in a time zone that is not affected." -- presumably for proper interaction with systems in those regions.
