Click-wheel (4th generation) iPod: Resets while attempting to play some tracks; Static and the iTrip

Resets while attempting to play some tracks MacFixIt reader Justin Morgan reports an issue -- for which we are seeking confirmation -- where his new fourth generation (click-wheel) iPod resets sporadically when attempting to play some tracks:

"I got a new 40GB Click Wheel iPod last week (my first iPod ever). I was listening to music in my car when the music stopped. I looked at the iPod and saw the black Apple, then was at the Menu. I tried playing the same song again to reproduce and it played fine. I mentioned this to the folks at my 'local' Apple Store (Short Pump, but its 70 miles away), and they didn't think much of it. Neither did I on the first happening.

"Yesterday I was listening to the iPod and had just chosen a new album to play. I had the iPod in my hand, felt the hard drive loading the new songs, and the first song started to play. I then realized the iPod was still loading music and thought it was taking too long to load my songs (its not fragmented) then saw the black Apple logo. [And of course the music stopped.] When the iPod finished booting, it was back at the Menu and did not remember where it had stopped.

"I called AppleCare and they were so interested that they wanted my iPod 'captured' by either them replacing it or exchanging under the 10-day return period. (I exchanged for another 40GB Click Wheel at Short Pump.) I guess the engineers will have fun with this one."

Static and the iTrip Meanwhile, we have some additional information on the previously reported click-wheel iPod static problem, including a note indicating that the problem is much more apparent when using the Griffin Technology iTrip FM transmitter:

MacFixIt reader Dave writes "The static problem also exists on the 20GB new iPod. I got mine yesterday, and notice both the periodic static when in long-play listen mode, and when skipping songs a lot.

"It's not too distracting, as long as I don't use the iTrip attachment. I don't know exactly if it's the same problem, or a different one, but the static sound seems to confuse the iTrip to either stop broadcasting, or to change frequency. Obviously, when this happens, listening pleasure drops to zero!"
