Installation problems -- try temporarily removing antivirus software Many users continue to report inability to install the Boot Camp 2.1 update (remember that the update needs to be applied while booted in Windows, not under Mac OS X). Users are experiencing the installation issues whether attempting to install Boot Camp 2.1 through Windows Software Update or the standalone installers.

It now appears that antivirus software can interfere with installation. Try temporarily removing such applications -- particularly McAfee VirusScan -- then reattempting Boot Camp 2.1 installation. Immediately after the Boot Camp update, reinstall or re-enable the Windows antivirus software.

Continuous reboots -- potential fix Users also continue to report an issue in which Boot Windows continuously, spontaneously reboots after installation of Boot Camp 2.1.

MacFixIt reader Robert Pruden writes:

Just installed Boot Camp 2.1 for Windows Vista (Ultimate 32-bit) and am experiencing a continuos loop of reboots. Had to force shutdown and boot to OS X. Still haven't been able to successfully boot to Vista again."

Another reader adds:

"I reinstalled Windows XP SP2 after trying Vista for 12 minutes, but that is another story.  Doing the security updates I noticed XP SP 3 so instead of installing years of patches went with that option.  Now XP gets through the start up screen then shows the error can not find file 'autochk' and then reboots, and reboot.  Quick search shows this can happen if the boot up drive is changed to hidden.  A whole lot of making windows boot floppies and hacking the drive, which is good if you can boot from a floppy. Have no problems running the installation in Parallels though.  Works with trouble."

In some cases, this issue can be resolved by disabling the Apple keyboard driver via the following process:

  1. Start Windows in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly as Windows is booting
  2. In control panel, navigate to: Administration > System Configuration > Start > and deselect kbdmgr then restart normally.

What's improved For users who can properly install and use Boot Camp 2.1, there are some notable improvements including:

  • enhanced BlueTooth support
  • better Mighty Mouse operation
  • Support for the MacBook Air's USB-to-Ethernet adapter
