FractionalBoldPatch If fractional character width is enabled, bold face types are displayed with extra white space. This looks rather odd and breaks WYSIWYG when printing. FractionalBoldPatch corrects the bug. The bug may exist only in some localized versions of the OS. (Thanks, Version Tracker.)

Norton 3.5 fixes hard drive that Norton 4.0 could not An article by Ricardo Serpa in Jornal do Brasil (translated for me by John Elias) describes how, after a system crash, Ricardo lost 2 of the 3 partitions on his hard drive (running Mac OS 8.5). Norton Utilities 4.0.x could not recover them. However, out of desperation, he tried Norton Utilities 3.5 - and it worked! (I assume these were not HFS Plus partitions.) So maybe you want to hold on to that old version of Norton.

Westmate update glitch in Mac OS 8.5? Following up yet again on our coverage of Westmate, Stephen Diamond claims that the update patch to fix the downloading problem (mentioned last time) cannot be installed when running Mac OS 8.5 (a checksum error is reported). A fix is expected soon.

PaperPort's fix for 8.5 conflict due this month An FAQ page on Visioneer's Web site states that it is "currently working on a fix (for the previously reported conflict with the Control Strip in Mac OS 8.5) and expects to have it available in mid Dec." (Thanks, Mark Falzone.)

ATM and jagged fonts: a reminder Following up on the issue of jagged fonts with ATM and Mac OS 8.5 (as reported last time): William Kucharski reminds me (as mentioned here before) that the link between the bitmap font files for certain fonts installed with Mac OS 8.5 (such as Times and Helvetica) and their matching PostScript font files may be broken. This means that if you delete the TrueType version of the font, ATM will not pick up the slack - and the display will be jagged. Using the TrueType font with ATM enabled may cause other display problems. Sort of a Catch-22.

Inline Extension vanished? Here's why An Apple TIL file (#24740) notes that "Language Kit Update incorrectly removes the Inline Support extension."

Sega's Yoot Tower Sega is releasing Yoot Tower, their first game for the Mac platform. It is the sequal to SimTower.
