AvantGo Connect: problems and solutions

Several readers have reported problems getting the just-announced AvantGo Connect/Conduit 3.3 (for viewing web sites on your Palm) to work. The most common symptom is an error when trying to download a channel. For example, Mike Reed states: "I have not been able to get AvantGo Connect/Conduit to communicate with AvantGo's servers. The install runs fine but I always get the error web page say the server did not receive the sync." A couple of readers offer potential solutions: Reinstall the files on the handheld using HotSync. Re-enter the server information on the handheld (server name: AvantGo Server, server address: sync.avantgo.com, port: 80) and do a HotSync again. This worked for me. [Tony Prosser] I tried reinstalling and it didn't work. However, I happened to notice that the installation that AvantGo has you go through never put the password in on the MobileLink app on the palm. It reads as unassigned. I put my password for my account in that field in the MobileLink app (it then changed to assigned) and resynched my palm and this time I didn't get the error 4096 anymore. The synch worked. [Anonymous] I downloaded today's MacFixIt with no problems at all. Here's what you do: go to AvantGo's web site; log in with your user name and password, and edit your account - then add a custom channel for MacFixIt that points to http://www.macfixit.com/. Do not try to add MacFixIt as an AvantGo server in his AvantGo Connect control panel. MacFixIt isn't an AvantGo server. Most web sites are not. Instead, one adds channels to their account at AvantGo.com. A channel is nothing more than a web site; but in some cases the web site is optimized for AvantGo. [Greg Neagle]
