Apple: Format FireWire drives as HFS Extended for best iMovie performance

Other formats may degrade performance.

CNET staff

In Knowledge base article #306143, Apple recommends that users seeking the best performance from iMovie when working with media on external FireWire hard drives should format said drives using HFS (HFS Extended).

The article says:

"For best performance with iMovie, format your FireWire hard drive as HFS Extended. Some hard drives come from the factory in other disk formats that are not as well suited for iMovie."

It goes on to provide instructions for checking the format of your drive (a simple "Get Info" in the Finder), and formatting a drive as HFS Extended using Disk Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities.
