AOL 5.0: what's not fixed

A reader sent us a document listing problems that still exist in America Online 5.0 for OS X. Most of them also existed in prior versions but were not fixed. These include:

  • May get random Kernel Panics, disconnects, reboots, and/or complete OS freezes while online via modem using Dual Processor G4 Macs. This is an Apple / Mac OS X issue. Disabling dual processing mode is Apple's current work around until the issue is fixed with a future OS X update. [We've noted this before.]

  • May occasionally get the message "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." when attempting to sign on to AOL from behind two layers of NAT (like Cable Modem and Airport).

  • Installing Mac OS 10.1 will cause the Network Prompt to remain Online and Disconnect if Idle settings to default to ON. Please see the Network Location Creation steps from the main AOL for Mac OS X beta area page, for instructions on turning these settings off.

On a related note, MacFixIt reader Tony Karre adds: "When I use AOL for Mac OS X to dialup/connect to the internet, I am unable to reach Microsoft-based sites that are password protected. One example is my office's Microsoft Exchange OWA site. Instead of displaying the standard Microsoft username/password/domain box (or just username/password for Netscape), the browser simply hangs forever. This fails identically for Netscape 4.73 in classic, IE 5.1 in OS X, or the AOL built-in browser. However, if I connect to the internet via my DSL provider, all is well with the same applications. AOL dialup networking for Mac OS X seems to interfere with the Microsoft network security. Interestingly, AOL 4.0 dialup worked just fine when I used OS 9 on my Mac."

Feedback on VersionTracker has been largely negative.
