AirPort 1.3 and third-party wireless cards: a follow-up

SkyLINE 2.4 and AirPort 1.3 Computer-to-Computer Regarding the recently released Farallon SkyLINE 2.4 software and previously reported problems with AirPort 1.3, Matt Snider writes: "The drivers do improve performance and signal strength. However, it appears that they are incompatible with Apple's new Computer-to-Computer wireless peer-to-peer connectivity standard in AirPort 1.3, namely IBSS (Independent Basic Service Set). According to Proxim/Farallon's tech support, an IBSS firmware and software updater to the SkyLINE 11MB card should be available within two months. For those of you needing wireless peer-to-peer networking between an AirPort-card equipped Mac and a SkyLINE equipped PowerBook, you should revert to Airport 1.2 software on the Mac."

Lucent fix? John Hammer adds: "The Lucent/Orinoco/Wavelan AirPort-compatible wireless cards were having a problem with Mac OS 9.1 similar to what you reported for SkyLINE. Orinoco's tech support advised me to delete all the Wavelan extensions and other components, install Apple's AirPort 1.3, and everything should work. Guess what? It works perfectly that way! The Orinoco card is recognized by the Apple Airport software as an Airport PC Card, and no Wavelan software is needed at all."
