Problems with files lacking .pdf extension MacFixIt reader Don reports an issue where files lacking a .pdf filename extension fail to properly open after updating to Adobe Reader 7.0.8 -- a problem we have not been able to duplicate in-house.

Don writes:

"I hate having the '.pdf' suffix in pdf file names. So as I've always done in the past, I delete the ".pdf" at the end of the file name. It's the only file format I do this to... with never a problem. Until now. "Updated" to Acrobat Reader 7.0.8. Now all the files that previously opened, pdf files without the pdf suffix, will no longer open. A major problem since I have hundreds of these files. And now none of them will open."

If you are having a similar issue, you may want to click on the PDF file(s)' icon in the Finder while holding the control and option keys, then from the "Always Open With" menu, select Adobe Reader. If your document successfully opens, try selecting all afflicted PDF documents and then going to the Finder's Get Info menu (under "File). You will then be able to batch-change all files to open with Adobe Reader from the "Open with:" option.

Disabling browser plug-in Yesterday we noted that, like previous 7.0.x releases, Adobe Reader 7.0.8 installs a plug-in that obviates Apple's mechanism used to display PDF documents in Safari.

This plug-in can be disabled by selecting "Preferences" from the "Adobe Reader" menu while Adobe Reader is launched, then selecting "Internet" settings and unchecking the "Display PDF in browser using:" checkbox.
