Acrobat Reader 5 and MouseMan bug

David Wadwell writes of an odd conflict between Acrobat Reader 5.0 and a scrolling wheel mouse:

"I have just installed Acrobat Reader 5.0 (AR 5.0) and there appears to be a glitch when using the scrolling wheel of the MouseMan in a PDF document opened in AR 5.0. If you use the mouse wheel to scroll down the page, it will move down according to the number of turns on the wheel. But then it automatically reverses the action and carries on scrolling back up(!) the page for about another 45-60 seconds (accompanied by flashing scroll buttons and a flashing cursor). The same thing happens in reverse if you are scrolling up the page. Scrolling using the scroll buttons themselves is OK - it is just the wheel. This does not happen in AR 4.0.

I am using MouseWare 3.5.1a and I also have installed Smart Scroll 3.7.1. The USB mouse is connected via a Swann MacSurfer PCI/USB card. My system is a Power Mac 5500 running Mac OS 8.6."

Douglas Wyman has confirmed this adding: "I have exactly the same problem and have worked hard to eliminate it to no positive effect (reinstalling Acrobat, reinstalling the OS, updating the control panel from 3.5.1 to 3.5.1a)."

Carter Jernigan confirms the same symptom with a Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical with MouseWare 3.5.2. He did not have it with a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. He is using a Power Mac G4 400 (AGP) running Mac OS 9.1.

Several other readers now also confirm this bug. Smart Scroll does not appear to be involved, as these readers do not have it installed.

Update: Goncalves Coelho writes: "I have the same symptom. It is not a specific glitch of AR 5.0 because I have the same problem with Prefs Manager 1.0b6."

Jeff Yeackle had essentially the sam symptoms with AppleWorks 6.0.4. Another reader contends it may affect all carbonized applications (and more?).
