Short Take: Palm V handheld being phased out

Handheld maker Palm is phasing out its original Palm V handheld and is also preparing the newest version of its operating system, the company confirmed. The $329 Palm V, which was released in early 1999, has largely been phased out in favor of the $399 Palm Vx, which offers more memory. At the same time, Palm is gearing up to introduce its OS 3.5, which includes new installation files and upgraded desktop software. In a departure from its usual practices, Palm is charging users for the OS, which will cost less than $25.
