New MacBooks could arrive in October

A mid-October MacBook launch misses the back-to-school rush, but has Apple in the right place for the holidays.

With new iPods out of the way, the next priority for Apple is the Mac.

John Gruber at Daring Fireball is reporting that Apple will roll out new MacBooks on October 14, which fits the usual Apple profile of launching new products on a Tuesday. We've expected that new Apple notebooks are coming for some time, with reports of a redesigned exterior for the MacBook to go along with Intel's latest mobile chips.

If that date comes to pass, Apple will have officially missed the back-to-school shopping season, which is generally one of the best-selling quarters for the Mac. Even if it launched the new notebooks tomorrow it would have missed most of the college students who were looking to upgrade before heading back to campus, but delays with the launch of Intel's Centrino 2 mobile chips probably didn't help.

By all appearances the Mac is still selling pretty well, but new notebooks never hurt, especially heading into the holiday season. I've also heard a few rumblings about new iMacs--perhaps just a speed bump--around the same time, but Gruber's report didn't elaborate on the iMac.

iMacs are already fast enough. My guess is the mini will get a bump. It's running very old chips at this point, and small drives. If the MacBook gets sped up, the mini, which is basically a macbook in a different case (with no screen), the mini will follow.

Know what else apple could do in October? They could hold a parade and throw their 16 billion dollars of cash assets out like confetti to the crowd, or develop the most awesome HTPC, just because they can. Also in October Apple could announce that they are switching all of their mobile processors to Nanos because they use less power which allows for longer battery life while still providing more processing power than an Atom.

I am a helpless techsite reader. I can't get enough of this stuff. I like apple as a company, and am using one of their computers to write this post. What I don't like is the CONSTANT guesswork, and reporting of guesswork and passing it off as journalism. It does a disservice to the readers. Apple could be doing a lot of things. I want to hear substantiated stories of what they could be doing and not BS that could be made up by some dingbat at a techsite hoping to get credited in a more well known techsites links. I mean, he 'could' be right and actually make a name for himself.

That's so the price sensitive back to school market will be convinced by the 20-40% markdowns on current models -- the new ones are for professionals willing to pay full price for the latest models.

I really wish there was a 20-40% markdown on the current models for the back to school promo. The truth is that you get a $100 discount off the regular price plus a rebate good for a free iPod ( or a discount off the price of an iPod depending on which model iPod you chose ). The introduction of the new models has nothing to do with the fact that they will be at a higher price. They will most likely cost about the same as the ones that are being replaced but Apple really needs to sell off the current batch of notebooks and make profit. The back to school event will be a success no matter when the new models are announced but by delaying them until after the promo is over Apple gets to sell even more computers. It kinda sucks for the end user but hey you are still getting one of the best computers out there plus Apple's main goal is to make money after all.

I for one am sick of the dizzing "model of the week" pace of tech stuff. What is wrong with having a venerable design and sticking with it for quite a few years? As long as they keep the innards up-to-date, vee don't need no schtenkin' "redesign"! Besides, each new complete redesign invites whole hosts of new issues, like RF problems, usability problems, etc.

baisa,

Every year, the fins have to get longer and more chrome! Remember the 1957 Chevy?

The new mac books are going to be designed after the new IMac's so think of the iMac look and eel in laptop form. I'm looking to get a replacement mac book so I'm going to wait till the new ones come out personally. Mainly I'm hoping that the new ones that may be released will come with a better video card the intel integrated x3100 is not that great. Not to mention Intel is in the works of a quad core mobil based CPU. So who knows we might be seeing them in the new mac books?

I was going to buy a new MacBook Pro today for my son, who is in university. But now I think I'll let him use mine until October. :-)

Does anyone have any information on new Macbook Pros? The current model is a little over two years old now. I want to get one but I'm worried the next-gen model is coming out soon. Haven't been able to find any news on this anywhere.

Also, will the new Macbooks be able to fun Final Cut Pro better than the current ones or?

I am debating on MacBook or iMac. Both have selling point. For MacBook, the display is not great for photo editing. For iMac, not portable. Tough decision.

I just hope they don't use Nvidia for their GPUs as Nvidia is still flushing those bad GPUs through the "partner channel".

I agree. My MacBook Pro could definitely use rounded edges where my wrists hit it. It can be quite uncomfortable. BAD design on that area. Other than that, the MBP is my fave, after years of Thinkpads.

I hope so.

Apple never lowers its prices. Why would they? Fanboys will buy for any price.

Dear Steve Jobs / Apple

Hope you are well and reading views from Apple fans from all forums.

What we would like to see in new apple mac laptops

NEW APPLE MACBOOK PRO- comming out in OCT 2008.

It will have the new Intel centrino 2 CPU.

I hope they make it affordable for students. With excelent spec.

Good battery power like the new Hp (24 hr battery) or the new Dell 19hr battery. Apple need to beat these records to compete.

11 inch and 12 inch laptops we need from APPLE. Nice and small portable with a cd/dvd re-writeable drive.

Something similar to the SONY Z SERIES AND SONY TZ SERIES.

Thanks

My wish is ...

A laptop with out a keyboard. Two displays, both for multi-touch. Ok, I will settle for one multi-touch screen to replace the keyboard. They can worry about future enhancements later, but it's about time these devices caught up to every sci-fi nuts' dreams.

Who am I kidding, the ergonomics would be a real pain. But it would be cool!

In My opinion there not going to make new imacs, at least for another 6 months i mean, why would they. There trying to make there laptops look like the imacs with aluminum black finish, the imac was first now its time for the macbooks and macbook pro to be updated. My advice if your going to buy an imac do it now, if your going to buy a laptop (exculding the macbook air) WAIT for a few months. there bound to update there laptops before christmas.
