Apple might be set to overhaul the design of its flagship notebooks later this year, according to a report.

AppleInsider believes that the MacBook and the MacBook Pro are due for a face-lift, but doesn't provide specific timing for the new rollout. If Apple follows through, the MacBook will get the most significant overhaul, moving from a plastic chassis to an aluminum one that's already in place on the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac computers.

It would make sense for Apple to have a common bill of materials for its notebook line, and to have all the Macs look more or less the same. The substance of the design tweaks aren't clear from the report, although it does say that "thin-is-in" techniques used to great aesthetic effect on the MacBook Air will be part of the new design.

It's also expected that the new notebooks will use Intel's Montevina notebook technology when they arrive, although that would be a quick turnaround from the Penryn notebooks Apple released earlier this year. And this would also be a likely time for Apple to add the multitouch trackpad found on the MacBook Air and newest MacBook Pros to the regular MacBook.

MBP needs update
by Riquez-001 April 7, 2008 4:06 PM PDT
If anything the MBP is in need of a facelift, the current aluminium
look goes all the way back to the PowerBook G4. The MacBooks are relatively new designs in comparison.

Let`s make it all clear , no...

let`s make it all white plastic. Apple is so retarded. It`s like a dictatorship that tells you what to like. With Windows we can build are own and have THOUSANDS of choices. And check out how Apple avoids questions and they routinely delete negative comments from their site.

macs are part of those thousands of choices...

macs run windows also and represent some of the variety in the notebook market. If people like them, they buy them. If not they buy some other notebook. Just because Apple does not own the entire computer market and thus all diversity contained in it does not mean it is doing anything bad.

i have to deal with my brother bashing apple too and i'm getting tired of it. it all depends on personal opinion. i want a macbook really bad and now i think i might just wait. but honestly i agree with cnetcensorssuck

Well who said you had to buy from Apple?

Maybe we decide we like what Apple offers and then we buy it!!!! I'm pretty sure I was never forced to choose them and told "You like this now." I'm pretty sure I went "Hmmm, I need something to video at a professional level and dont want to put up with hassle of having and Avid system that throws a fit every time I try to add a clip to the time line. I guess that leaves Final Cut Pro. Sweet I can have a personal laptop and editing computer all in one!!"

Have not regretted buying Apple on bit. Sure, I was a Windows user and wasn't supper thrilled. Try and separate me and my Mac now and I will murder you in front of a cop, its my baby.

The plastic design has a big pro: routinely, the MacBook will get
60% better airport signal strength over it's pricier aluminum
mate. 802.11g suffers greatly, 802.11b a touch less. The
antenna is in the lid, and 2 inch plastic 'windows' on the sides
just don't cut it. If wifi is important to your laptop needs, the
Faraday cage of a MacBook Pro really hampers things.

And the plastic seems less prone to stupid user tricks. It might
crack upon dropping, but it doesn't shape deform to the point of
unusability as do the Al books. Seen a warped MacBook pro on
a table just wobble? Or a battery that won't seat in its slot?

Macs can take quite a beating -- they are one of the most
robust machines out there for taking normal daily abuse. But
the metal skins aren't all good.

When Jobs first announced Apple's move to Intel, he said Apple
would come out with new products as a result of Intel's better
performance-per-watts ratio. That was 3 years ago, a decade in
the PC timeline. It's about time he made good on his word.

But to be honest, I'm not really looking forward to the next
revision. Apple has clearly demonstrated its intention of
becoming a full-fledged consumer electronics company. The
next line will be more gadget-like rather than something useful
we could use for work.

But as the Mac Guy insinuates, work? That's for boring old men
in stuffy suits. The Mac is all about eternal youth and
neverending playtime, babeh.

mbp already has multitouch
by jeroneanderson April 8, 2008 10:10 AM PDT
Why is the author suggesting multitouch is needed in the new macbook pro revision when the current mbp line already has multitouch?

article is suggesting multitouch for macbook which does lake that feature.
by Seig June 4, 2008 9:47 PM PDT
to jeroneanderson:

the autho is suggesting multitouch to the macbook, he says it needs it just like how the mbp and air already have it.

I can attest to the previous post regarding the ability of the polycarb MacBooks to take a beating. My wife dropped my Mac from her lap while stepping out of a Toyota 4Runner onto asphalt......about a 3ft drop. The case corners were scuffed slightly but there were no cracks. Of course, the Mac kept on ticking as if nothing happened. I use my Mac everyday, take it to/from work everyday and on every trip I've been on since I got it a year ago. I don't baby the thing either with an add-on outer case.

The macbook already comes with a multi touch track pad - apple just doesn't advertise it. The only thing the macbook track pad doesn't do is the "swap" feature, which seems pretty useless anyway. If you want to use multi touch features on your macbook you jsut need to enable them under system preferences.

I am pretty sure that the new line of macbooks will look very similar to the macbook air. That being a black back lit keyboard, thicker design but still slim, lass exposed jacks. I am pretty sure that is what you can expect. It should be based off the macbook air.
