More App Store tweaks expected with iPhone 2.2

The iPhone 2.2 software is expected to come with a tweak to the App Store category fields, shown here.

Hot on the heels of the crucial iPhone 2.1 release, Apple appears to be getting ready to release another software update.

We've known that iPhone 2.2 has been coming for a while, with the primary change expected to involve making Safari on the iPhone look more like Safari on the Mac. But AppleInsider has some details on how the interface for the App Store--perhaps the best thing and worst thing about iPhone 2.0--is expected to change.

One notable tweak is that the selection of an application by category on the iPhone will become easier, with wider fields for each category, such as Entertainment or Finance. Apple is also expected to add a "Report a Problem" button to the preview page for a single application.

Apple is making a few other subtle changes to the App Store, such as requiring that all reviews come from people who have actually purchased the application and listing "New" applications according to their original release date (instead of by the date of their most recent update).

The newly detailed tweaks aren't expected to arrive until 2.2 is fully baked, which is expected to take place at some point in October.

Who gives a rat's ass? Fix Safari and add copy/paste - don't tweak the look and feel.

The App Store makes $$$. They make no money by adding something useful, like copy/paste. I'm still betting no copy/paste until next hardware generation.
by Vegaman_Dan September 30, 2008 12:59 PM PDT
I suspect they may never add copy/paste due to security issues. All applications now run as root. Giving applications the ability to have content put into the system memory that can carry over to other applications opens up a very bad vector of attack. Since there is no security on the iPhone, this could be a hole that nobody could defend against.

They may change it at some point in the future, but I suspect this may be related to the reason why they don't offer it now.
by DarkHawke October 1, 2008 1:45 AM PDT
@Vegaman_Dan: That's ridiculous. Since when has a copy/paste function been an effective vector for malware? And if it ever was, seems like there've been effective fixes for it, since of all the problems with Windows OSes over the years, I've NEVER heard that one!

Implementing security on the iPhone/iPod Touch is easy: admin password, just like with OS X, of which both devices are supposedly running a version. Whatever the reason, I wish that Apple iStonewall would breach just enough to TELL US why they have yet to implement copy/paste, or if they ever will. Or maybe CNET just has yet to report it. Didn't know about the real reason Flash has yet to hit the iPhone till the bulletins today...sourced from ANOTHER website!

How about adding the ability to change the user agent string in Safari like you can on the MAC?

@djdk74: I totally agree being allowed to change the user agent. I keep getting sites that switch to "mobile PC" WAP pages which are extremely ugly and non-functional. They are made for Windows Mobile phones that essentially don't have a browser. And, these types of sites do not let you switch to normal web pages!! Try www.sportsline.com/ to see what I mean -- totally useless.

MAC? What's that?.. I though MAC was a mak-up company.. maybe you meant MAC address????

". I though MAC was a mak-up company.. maybe you meant MAC address????"

No he probably means Mac as in short for Macintosh. A common mistake since PC is an abbreviation for "personal computer" some people use MAC when they refer to an Apple personal computer.

MAC also has a special meaning in networks. All PCs have a MAC

Please give us copy and paste. The lack of this feature hobbles my normal use of the phone at least once a day.

Failing that, at least tell us why you refuse to acquiesce to the demands of most iPhone users.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people B+M about "not having copy & paste" on the iPhone.

I guess it's personal usage; I've been using "Palm Pilots," Treos and other smart phones for years; got the original iPhone and now the 3G, and I can count on one hand the number of times I said "Boy, I wish I had copy & paste." A small subset of iPhone users I know all say the same thing; not having copy paste is just not a big deal.

One has to wonder if the "The iPhone sucks because there's no copy/paste" is just a vocal minority. I'd have to say it is.

I guess if you do not use your phone to write notes, write emails, jot down class notes etc etc you would not use copy and paste but while the feature was marginal for older phones due to their limited capabilities, but the iPhone is a portable device that I use for work.

For those of us who write lots of notes copy/paste is essential and needed regularly.

I would like to use it to post HTML on MySpace and transfer contact info easily without a computer. I don't think the iPhone sucks though...

Copy / Paste will be useful but I would much rather see a native VOICE DIALING feature. If they give us VD I could care a lot less about copy / paste. After all... it is a phone and here in Cali we can't use it while driving. Priority's 1st!!!

If you don't want to give us copy and paste... than don't give us a reason to need it... make data more transferable for example... if I click on a phone number in an Email maybe I want to do more than just dial it perhaps I'd like to add it to my address book or even send an SMS to that number???

copy and paste would be lovely for this update, but the thing i miss that a lot of ppl dont seem to want to talk about is MMS texting! i got a great camera on this phone and i cant do anything but take a picture and send it by email....mms texting would make the iphone my best love!

thats what being able to email it is for its so they can get away with not being able to text it plus you can email to someones text messages if you know it
by Angarvin517 October 1, 2008 10:59 AM PDT
How is it that nobody is asking for Multimedia Text Messages. More often than any other moment with this phone, i have been set back because i cannot simply send a picture or file to someone through text. Copy/paste is simply not that important. Stereo blutooth, multimedia text, landscape keyboard, flash support, VIDEO CAPTURE!!!!! this is what I believe would make it the ultimate, Do-All/Beat-all Iphone 3G

Here's a list for everyone:

1. Stereo Bluetooth for listening to music wirelessly.
2. Push messaging. I thought we were supposed to get push messaging in Q3, so Instant Messaging programs would work when you don't have them open.
3. Cut & Paste
4. Land scape mode for text messaging
5. Voice Dialing

it should have happened in Q3 but apple will not allow any app but their own to run in the backround
by pardo03 October 1, 2008 11:02 AM PDT
COpy and Paste would be great, but what I really want is the ability to search across all data types for information. For example type in a name and see the references to them in email, calendar and contacts.

I disagree about the auto spell checker. That is the only reason why I can text quickly on the iphone. If we had landscape sms, then i can see removing the spell checker

We don't need ANY new features in 2.2, we just need the current features to work.

Making phone calls without constantly getting "call failed" would be a start.

Also, fix Bluetooth. (I can't turn on Bluetooth now that I have 2.1 installed. It used to work. I restored twice, didn't work)

2.0 killed my BT and WiFi.. I had to return the phone under warranty.

My biggest thing i would like them to add would be MMS.

Is apple finally going to fix the application update errors that I get whenever I try to update any application? That is the single biggest bug on the phone right now, it should trump everything else.

You can fix this yourself. Just restore and do NOT use a back up to restore from. Set up as new phone and that will fix the problem. Its a pain. but effective.

It's going to be Tuesday when they announce the new 2.2 I bet with the new Macs!
