The Harmony Adapter for PS3 will retail for $59.99.

A few months ago, we reported that Logitech was getting ready to launch an accessory that would allow its IR-based Harmony remotes to control the PS3, which only has a Bluetooth wireless interface. Well, according to Logitech, the Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 is a couple of weeks away from hitting stores in North America. Europe will see a July launch, while Australia will get it any day.

Logitech has a blog post up that offers a full FAQ on the $59.99 adapter, but the long and short of it is the accessory simply converts your Harmony's IR commands to Bluetooth signals. For better or worse, unlike some PS3 IR dongles already on the market, the adapter requires an AC adapter. But Logitech explains that it not only didn't want the adapter to use up one of "your valuable USB ports," and without an external power source, you wouldn't be able to power on your PS3 using the adapter because the PS3's USB ports are dead when the unit is powered off.

While we still think it's tragic and outrageous that Sony failed to include IR, Logitech's entry into the PS3 adapter arena is good news for home-theater fans and Harmony owners. In case you're wondering, no, it doesn't work with non-Harmony remotes--and no, it isn't compatible with the Wii either.

The underside of the adpater.

Great reporting, and timely to boot. I could read the official FAQ, or I suppose I could just read a complete review of the product from someone that has actually used the product, i.e. at Engadget.

From Engadget:

It's too early for us to give our final impressions of the Harmony adapter, but we'll have more to report after we wring it out for a few days. Until then, feel free to peruse the official fact sheet and our photos below.

What's your point? Using the product, or even seeing it, is of more use to the reader than a link to the company's FAQ. This article is just providing a link, and is far behind others available on this product.

I hate spending the money on something that should have been included, but not much of a choice. My ps3 is my BR player in my home theater, this will be a great edition.

It would be a great device if it were half the price. I paid less for my Harmony 550 Remote!!! Quite honestly, I bought a $12 IR Dongle and it works just fine. Sure I can't turn it on remotely, but I need to physically go to the PS3 anyway to put in a BD disc, or I just pull out the PS3 Controller quickly to turn on the system. Not a huge deal and not worth $60!!!

agreed, mdub. $60? c'mon! How can the PS3 BlueTooth BR remote cost $20 (or max $25 if you get ripped off) but logitech's workaround is $60? Can't they add BT to a remote for $25 instead of creating an external IR adapter?

IMO, yet another funky adapter work-around is not the answer. First, it was tragic Sony didn't add IR to PS3. Then, to add insult to injury Sony didn't bother to add IR capabilities to the official PS3 remote to make it compatible with other components. There is a definite market for a dual remote (that handles BOTH IR and BT).

My Harmony works just fine with my Xbox 360, oh yea Logitech even made a special 360 version! Still not sure what Sony was thinking. It's lame I got my harmony remote and yet I have to keep my PS3 controller out if I want to control it and watch Blu-rays. Maybe now I have something to get next time I have $60 worth of best buy reward certificates.

This is already available from amazon.com.
I just paid like $85.00 to d the same thing just three months ago. Bummer.
I'm sure you could get this to work on a non Harmony remote, although you would most likely need a Harmony to learn from( I assume they will jumble up what button does what and the adapter will decode and output the proper commands so using someone elses codes would not work).

I love the idea of using my Harmony with my PS3, but coughing up $60, plus having to find another outlet, is a deal breaker. Sorry, I'll get my lazy ass off the recliner to turn the damn thing on, and grab the PS3 remote.

Any thoughts on if this will only work with a Logitech proprietary IR or will other Universal Remotes be able to hitch a ride off this thing... like my AT&T U-verse remote?

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be easier to buy a remote that has Bluetooth and IR? I realize it's for people who already own a remote, but if you were going to buy a new one, that is what I would look for.

The annoying thing about IR is you have to point the remote at the TV to use it, I prefer Bluetooth because of that. It's not that big of a deal to use the controller for the PS3 anyway. Buy the Sony remote, it's half the price.

but buying the ps3 remote would just defeat the purpose of the harmony remote, because the harmony remote will turn on and setup everything with the touch of a button while the ps3 remote would just control the ps3, which if that's all you want to do you could probably get away with using the controller.

It's not just you. I have away my worthless Harmony remote because it couldn't do the job. Now I'll wait for someone to catch a clue and include a cheap BlueTooth chip in their remote so it actually is universal. Hopefully not Harmony I don't want to fight their system again to get simple things to work right.

I think it's tragic and outrageous that there are not more devices using Bluetooth remotes. :-)

We love Bluetooth with the PS3 controllers and remote
then again I count 4++ remotes next to the tv. If they were all Bluetooth I would still have a bunch
but would not have to point directly at the tv and other devices.

I think your looking at it backward, it's the PS3 that should have an IR receiver like 99.9% of other home theater equipment.
by stepyourgameup May 13, 2009 6:25 AM PDT
I'll get one. What's another $60 when I have already spent around $10,000 on my home theater.

I have to agree. I have personally paid out; $400 360+$100 wifi, $600 for ps3, $250 for a Wii, $2500 for a 58 inch plasma, $600 for Onkyo receiver, $2000 for Klipsch speakers, $150 for Harmony 880.... $60 isn't really a big deal.

LOL, "tragic and outrageous" that there's no IR port on the PS3. Where do they find these guys?

Looking forward to it's release. Perhaps in a perfect world it would have been provided by Sony, but it wasn't. I'm over it and hope to be the first to get it.

Meh.

I gave away my Harmony remote. It was so "easy to use" that I could never force it to work right. Now that it has an expensive dongle instead of a cheap BluTooth chip. Meh and more Meh.
