Updated at 1 p.m. PDT Monday, October 20, with name of song and artist and link to YouTube video of the track.

Sony is delaying the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 title Little Big Planet due to a late discovery that background music tracks contained two expressions found in the Koran, an inclusion some might deem offensive.

"We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologize for any offense that this may have caused," Sony said on its official PlayStation blog Friday. "Sorry for the delay, and rest assured, we are doing everything we can to get Little Big Planet to you as soon as possible."

Concerns about the lyrics--contained in the track "Tapha Niang" by Grammy Award-winning African kora player Toumani Diabate--came to light on official PlayStation Community forums and reportedly on some Arabic gaming forums, as well.

"We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Koran deeply offending," a contributor to the Sony forums wrote on Thursday. "We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it."

The puzzle-based game--in which players guide highly customizable lead characters through a series of mental challenges--was slated for a North American release Tuesday. Instead, Sony says it will start shipping Little Big Planet to North American retailers on October 27. Copies of the game already released elsewhere in the world will be recalled from retailers and replaced, according to Sony.

British game developer Media Molecule, creator of Little Big Planet, said it was as "shocked and dismayed by (the delay) as anyone--shellshocked and gutted. We can't wait for you all to get playing and creating!"

Media Molecule added, however, that it takes the potentially offensive licensed tracks seriously. "LBP should be enjoyable by all," the company said on its Web site.

Within 12 hours of hearing about the issue, the game maker said it prepared an automatic "day zero" patch that would have removed the potentially offensive lyrics, which it says it believes were in Somali. "However, a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support...was to replace existing disks," Media Molecule said.

Many reviewers have hailed the game, calling it beautiful and brilliant. A CNET review posted Thursday described it as "novel and imaginative" and gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A number of videos containing the song have been posted to YouTube in the last several days.

Speaking of "offensive comments," what about this:

"the Messenger of Allah . . . would say: 'Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war. . . . When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. . . . Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them . . .'" (Muslim Book 19, Number 4294).

"fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war) . . . " (Qur?an 9:5).

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29).

"Allah's Apostle said: 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle . . . '" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24).

"It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).

?Allah?s Apostle said, ?I have been made victorious with terror. The treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand?? (Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220).

How do you figures that? When Christians complained that the Manchester Cathedral was being used in Resistance: Fall of Man, Sony only issued an apology. Seems like they didn't care about people's feelings and beliefs in that case.
by ShadowGryphon October 22, 2008 3:20 PM PDT
Pardon me, but this is out of hand.
Every time someone does something the muslims don't like, everyone starts doing the P.C. shuffle.
"We are so sorry, we didn't mean to offend you, please don't suicide bomb us, declare a jihad on us, or issue a fatwa against us! whimper! whine! grovel!"
Screw that! What about the Christians who've been lampooned and offended ?
What about all the others groups (religious or otherwise) who've be over targets ?
And all this over a SINGLE SONG that has -some- mulsim scriptures.

SCREW THEM!
by a9925 October 18, 2008 6:07 PM PDT
so when is Sony going to replace all games that use the phrase "God d?&^" since Christians find this phrase offensive? Funny how singing parts of the Quran are offensive to one group and cause delays of games but something offensive to another group is routinely included in every game.

Yeah, but do you REALLY only want to be respected out of fear? I have a low opinion of all religions but like most people am about out of patience with Islam (rather than Muslims, who ironically, are fine citizens on an individual basis), if only because of the hypersensitivity and ultra-violence of the religion.

You don't want people to tip-toe around you just because you might kill them, do you? That's what's happening here - Sony couldn't give a rat's one about the feelings of a bunch of wife-beating clerics but like most people they want to stay healthy, so the ridiculous ban stands, and this merely serves to show up how intolerant Islam as an institution really is.

I should like to add that I dearly hope this fine civilisation comes out of the dark ages soon and joins the rest of us in making the world a better place. If the Americans can elect a Barak Obama, maybe there's hope for us all...
by sota_phobos October 18, 2008 9:32 PM PDT
I dont see how electing Barack Obama would help any of this out
by Zeeshan47 October 19, 2008 9:24 AM PDT
First of all, all the monotheistic religions believe in a God. The god might go by different names, but it's all chalked up to linguistics. God = Allah = Yahweh(well that last one is slightly different, but similar enough for my purposes). Therefore, "God D***" is no more offensive to you than it is to other people of different faiths. True, the phrase is more of a colloquialism than most, but something to the same effect exists in all three religions, and I'm pretty damn sure that saying "Allah D***" won't raise some eyebrows.

Secondly, badnewswade is absolutely ridiculous. If you're going to chalk this change up to a fear of extremists, might as well not say anything bad about those Irish, Southerners(of the US), Black Muslims, all kinds of African-Americans, the Russians, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Vietnamese. There are good and bad people in every religious and ethnic subset, and the bad often overshadow the good. Hypersensitivity you say? Turns out, there's a clash of ignorance on both sides. Neither party is willing to accept similarities and let differences be civil. The western world was the first to butt into the Muslim world's business, mind you, lest you forget colonialism. The religion does not promote ultra-violence either. Thanks for pulling a buzzword out of Clockwork Orange by the way. The religion itself professes peace, as do most other religions. Even Satanism, for the most part, promotes uncontroversial practice(this is in reference to LaVeyan Satanism, as I believe no other facet can claim an organized ideology). Let's put it this way. After colonialism, the western world left Muslim countries absolutely destitute and with no control over their most valued possession, the vast majority of the people descended almost into poverty. The economic gap had widened to an absurd level. it is proven that terrorism is best bred in conditions slightly better than poverty. Why? People will always seek a scapegoat for their misfortunes, and people in poverty are barely making ends meet. Those who can spare an hour or two, or some meager amount of funds are the most dangerous. Set them in a direction, and they will take your message to heart. The real aggressors in this situation are those in relative power(the sheiks and ayatollahs) who have nothing but pure hatred against the western world in their heart, and use their influence to brainwash entire nations. This is somewhat analogous to McCarthyism in that instability or uncertainty breeds extremism.

Oh and learn to spell a candidate's name before you support him. Barack Obama will most definitely not fix our problems. He has openly suggested the bombing of Pakistan, and that has been seen as a major failure both in the domestic and foreign policy paradigms. Domestically, he not only alienated an entire group of voters in one fell swoop, but went against his party's policy for the centrist vote, in effect alienating the most ardent detractors of war. Internationally, it was an awful awful move, akin to showing your opponents your terrible hand in a game of poker, and still betting as if they have not looked. When policies are announced prior to any guaranteed possession of power, it allows the other side to regroup and rally support. If you really support a candidate based on promises of change or purely on party affiliation, you might want to reconsider. Change is not necessarily good. I know I just can't bring myself to support a socialist.

Little big planet is a E game. Most e rates games don't say god damnit. If LBP was a mature game than they wouldnt care.
by SJ2571 October 19, 2008 5:21 PM PDT
That's because the Christian God is not considered in everyday life. Wonder why. Think about it.
by guitarbandit7498 October 20, 2008 7:10 AM PDT
Yeah, it's pretty stupid. But for what ever reason it's always like that for Christians. It's almost like America takes Christians as a joke nowadays, even though this country was founded on Christian values and beliefs and is a Christian based country. It's the widest accepted religion in the world, but let a few ********** cry about their feelings getting hurt and the world must come to a standstill until they're appeased. Screw those people. They don't make up a signifigant part of the gaming industry anyway.
by inachu October 20, 2008 8:13 AM PDT
Your comment is 100% valid and technically true but n ot just in games but in movies and tv shows as well.
For real now. some movies have bad guys wearing crosses and the media is trying to make christianity one big grey messy goop to show it is not all black and white which is a total lie in itself.

They do this to trivialise any and all christians. The movies were great and entertaining but at what cost?

Yeah, it's ironic how mis-uses of the Christian's God's name won't cause delays...but a phrase or two from the Quran will delay a game release for as long as it takes.

And...the phrases weren't even Anti-Muslim or anti-Quran, right? That's stupid...you'd think Muslims would WANT people humming along to the words from their "Holy Book".

by Dylan_Wisor October 18, 2008 8:53 PM PDT
That would make sense. But combining words from the Qur'an with music is considered offensive. (Hymns aren't very big in Islam.)

Don't really see this as a big issue. Apparently the guy who brought it up wasn't some ***-backwards psycho with an explosive vest, just an average well-meaning Muslim guy. (He does own a PS3 after all.) Sony's reaction was also very responsible in my opinion.

Stop yelling, it's freedom from government intrusion, not say whatever you want. Sony can do whatever it wants, but it just didn't want to **** off a billion people...especially since it's the people who take it to the streets. How would Sony feel if someone died in a riot over this game?
by timber2005 October 18, 2008 8:33 PM PDT
"Freedom of Speech and Expression" as defined in the Constitution's First Amendment means that GOVERNMENT ENTITIES cannot deny your speech or expression against, for, towards, etc. a subject, idea, whatever.

Keyword: GOVERNMENT.
by sythara October 20, 2008 7:20 AM PDT
Its all ok. People misundersand what freedom of speech is, and what freedom for a business to conduct business however they want means.
by jonathanrowson October 20, 2008 12:13 PM PDT
But you seem to forget, that Media Molecule is a British company and as such, not directly beholden to the tenets of our Constitution. But, I fully agree that offensive content should be removed in all cases, not just to meet the desires of one group over another.
by nahedh12 October 18, 2008 6:28 PM PDT
@a9925-Actually, Muslims find that insulting as well since the word "Allah" has basically the same meaning as "God" in Arabic, so I half-agree with you. But at least Sony is moving one step closer to that. Try e-mailing them and they may change that as well.

This is not freedom of speech. It's just a decision by business. They're still allowed to publish it according to the law but they choose not to.

I don't know what's the deal with this. Muslims are just so weird.

Maybe I was a little rash. I should have phrased it to say "defending freedom of speech". I wish Sony would just come out and say "It's our right to publish whatever we like under the first amendment, and if you don't like it, don't buy it."
by doczane October 19, 2008 3:52 AM PDT
Its weird coz u don't understand Islam. Qura'n is very holy and sacred to muslim, even touching it requires ablution for the muslim part, menstruating muslim women can't even read it until their menses are dry. Mixing it with music and putting it in a video game is definitely offensive, and Sony is doing a good gesture by retracting it, dont worry, whats a week more for you to wait to indulge in this game. Freedom of speech doesn't mean offending other people, harmony and peace is what we seek. No need to fight for just a video game. Peace y'all..
by giga90 October 18, 2008 6:41 PM PDT
These are one of the reasons i hate muslims, they are so freaking sensitive! It's not even offending their beliefs, its just a few words. Lucky the Malaysian muslims are alright and are more modern, they always shout out "Allahmak" (God's mother) when something happens.

You're being really offensive right now. Don't automatically group all muslim people together; but it's not just about one word, some muslim people do not believe in music and they don't want the holy phrases in the quran to be mixed with music in that matter [the quran is like our bible]

everyone has different priorities and believes different things, and alot of people value religion above video games, so think what you want about races but you don't have to voice your opinion in such an ignorant way.

in the end it was just a misunderstanding between muslims and the business, and it was solved. why would you hate muslims for that? I think that's just racism. you are not being sensitive ENOUGH to respect what people think is important to them.

good day to all of you.
by speaknoevil October 18, 2008 11:32 PM PDT
@giga90. Labelling someone, or group sensitive is a matter of perspective, they could just as easily throw that back at you and accuse you of being insensitive... right? This is about showing respect, tolerance and understanding. The ignorant, the self centred and the less educated tend to be the first ones to dismiss the impact of an action and also the first to complain against a "perceived injustice" when it occurs against themselves or their interests. Perhaps a little more research and alot less in the assuming department would prevent the circulation of ignorant opinions/ideas. "Allah mak" is not a malaysian expression its used extensively in all muslim countries and most certainly DOESN'T mean "God's mother" as you put it. It means "God be with you". You assumed because 'Om-mak' means 'your mother' that 'mak' must also mean mother. Its a bit like saying that since 'mice' means a type of rodent therefore 'ice' must also mean rodent (see what i did there :)
by Zeeshan47 October 19, 2008 9:32 AM PDT
You sir, are an absolute tool. A few words can be very very offensive, just as if I was to say that Jesus was an a**hat, or Moses liked to partake in homosexual activities(reiterating that I do not believe these to be true, they are just more tangible examples for a simpleton to wrap his mind around. The malaysian muslims are no more modern or 'alright" than other european or north american muslims. Please stop trolling and go wank off in a corner to pass the time. At least that doesn't make you seem like a pisswad.
by procnetnews October 19, 2008 1:26 PM PDT
"AllahmaK" as you mentioned in your comment is (God's mother).
That is not the real translation. the word "AllahmaK" means ( God be with you OR God with you )
Next time before you comment make sure you know what you commenting about.
God Bless.
by darrennah1991 October 19, 2008 7:52 PM PDT
'i hate muslims' dude, that is so immature. outright hatred is simply barbaric. from where you seem to come from, it looks like you're a malaysian. i've been there and you guys are seriously out of the light.

malaysians in general don't read books, don't take intellectual pursuits seriously, and like you are bigots in your own country! learn some tolerance and maybe your country won't be so ****ed up.

allahmak, that does not mean God's mother. where did you get that from? seriously, chill. before you decide to post anything up, please do proper, extensive-good- research.

ps. don't disgrace malaysia with your blatant accusations and outright -unfounded- bigotry.
by msia007 October 24, 2008 2:07 AM PDT
you are a disgust, malaysians dont say dat , they dont say Allahmak, ooburii, by saying "dont group all muslims together" ur sayin dat we are a "wrong" muslim, well we're not , this guy here is makin fun of us muslims, we said "ALAMAK" like "oh mother" , it's totally different, this guy is just flaming u and me and every other muslims on malaysians and the world
by badnewswade October 18, 2008 8:11 PM PDT
This sort of over-sensitivity really doesn't do anyone any favours; non-muslims will resent muslims for delaying their game, and muslims will find themselves increasingly left out of the global culture as any and all references to their religion, whether respectful or flippant are increasingly censored out of popular culture for fear of violent retribution.

Muslims should think about that the next time they moan about America, Japan and Europe dominating everything - we'd love to add middle eastern and Islamic riffs and have you guys along, but we're just too **** scared of being murdered by your raving loonie coreligionists to even go there! I think this is very sad as it leaves so many people out and relegates their culture to backwater, hick status. I hope we can all join together in rejecting this sort of silliness in the future.

abouhou is a fool. forgive his idiocy. most muslims are far more articulate and far less belligerent than you may think. we don't moan about much, seeing as how i'm an american first and a muslim second. the success of america overshadows any religious qualms i may have. that being said, sony itself is responding to a nudge in the socially correct direction. just replace islam and muslim with homosexuality and gays or any other subset and i'm sure you'll have a different perspective. it's just not fair to make this into a battle of absolutes or ignorance.

ps - the quran only prescribes prayer three times a day. the five times is derived from the hadith. the hadith are not above the quran. we are all more than welcome to pray only three times a day.

ok, anyone defending freedom of speech in "this country" and the "first amendment" should think again before commenting.. sony is an international corporation based in japan, and the developer of the game is in uk FFS... geez, you have a bad case of ethnocentrics, usa is a part of this planet, its not the whole planet nor its a different planet
then again, pieces of quran are sung by imams five times a day all over the world.. i don't see what the big deal is, quran is already a poem made for singing. people should understand their religions fully before complaining, a little education and iq points higher than g.w.b. would be nice on the side too.

and by the way, god damn you sony!!! no mac support for nothing for years, ignoring all the mac and linux users, but delaying/recalling a crappy game whom no one even cares about for a bunch of religious idiots who don't represent even 0.0001% of muslims worldwide? smart...

@murbo. Not having alot of knowledge about any particular subject whether it be a science or a religion is excuseable and mostly certianly acceptable, we're all deficient in some way or another (any polymaths logged in? ....probably not) but to express an opinion based on conjecture and presenting it as fact and condemning others who dont share your opinion and who may have just "a little" more knowledge than you in that area (because hey it kind of relates to them) is ...foolish to say the least. Perhaps its you that needs a little education before making random comments about things that you have very little understanding of. 1stly the Quran isnt 'sung' 5 times a day its chanted. Granted its a little different to what the west defines as chanting but there are rules that determine the proper way its to be recited, but most certainly its not sung. 2ndly the main issue here was the mixing of music with sacred islamic texts...guess you missd that part. We muslims dont do that. Given that your probably not interested at all as to the reasons i'll skip the lesson because im sure your conjecture will suffice you...right? Suffice to say that the Quran is NOT a poem made for singing as you put it. Rest assured that the ppl who made the complaint are very much aware of the issues and are alittle more informed than you are friend

This is a load of crap, First of all more people have been insulted by games with no action taken by the publisher. For example, if Christians complained about the use of the word 'Jesus Christ' as a cuss nothing would change (maybe we should start saying, 'Mohammed' as a curse ...)

Secondly, the Quran is only considered inspired in it's original language (ancient Arabic). Translations of the text are never given the same 'authority' (and in fact are looked down upon by most) and according to this, they were speaking in Somalian.

I know that violent muslims are the (extreme) minority, but I wonder if this was done out of fear?

actually nowimcool, the equivalent of the use "jesus christ" when a christian is frustrated is already used by muslims as "yaa Allah" or "ohh God." Mohammad is not god only a prophet along with jesus.

It?s understandable why Sony delayed the game. They?ve been marketing it as a family friendly, fun for everyone, type of game; so making it as likable as possible is in there best interests. That being said, I find it a little hypocritical of them to be delaying one of the most anticipated games of the last two years over a few song lyrics sung in a language that the overwhelming majority of their customer base doesn?t even understand. (I?ve already pre-ordered the game, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth thinking a game I bought specifically because it was marketed as a creative outlet has been delayed so it could be censored.) I hate that they are pandering to what is most likely only one or two complaints made by an obvious zealot; who only represents a fraction of a percent of Muslims in general, not even counting the Muslim gaming community (which is an even smaller fraction). Frankly I?m surprised the individual who made the complaint even plays video games in the first place. If only a few sung words from the Quran were enough to offend this person I?m not aware of many games that this character would find acceptable. My main concern is what role will censorship play in Little Big Planet? I thought the whole point of the game was to promote users to make and create their own content and share with others. Surely some of the things people create are going to offend a few people. Does that mean any user created content that is complained about could be taken down? As a customer who already bought a game in advance, when I go to pick up my copy I think I might demand a refund? I can?t support Little Big Planet if they are promoting censorship.

I misread the title of this article at first, and thought that it said that the Quran foretold the delay of Little Big Planet. Now THAT would have been something!

Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing.

Good point! I tweaked the headline slightly to make it more clear. Thanks.
