An iPhone 3.0 software wish list

by Kent German

The iPhone is getting updated.

Update: We now know the details of iPhone 3.0. Happily, it includes many of the features listed here. Check out the iPhone 3.0 details and read the live blog of the event.

As iPhone owners await Tuesday's announcement of the iPhone 3.0 software, the Web is abuzz with speculation about what new features the update will bring. Of course, we couldn't let this opportunity pass without chiming in as well.

Ever since the first iPhone was born more than two years ago, and following the introduction of the iPhone 3G last summer, we've made no secret that the iPhone lacks many features we think it should have. We've blogged a few times detailing our complaints, but here you can find a full list in no particular order.

We've also browsed through your blog comments and e-mails to see the features that you hope to see. And please feel free to add anything that we've missed.

Multimedia messaging - A very basic feature that every other cell phone has. Yet, the good news is that it appears to be a done deal. It's about time.

Tethering - From our perspective there hasn't been a huge cry from CNET readers for this feature, but it looks like we're going to get it.

Cut and paste - A no-brainer, and one we get from many CNET readers.

Text forwarding - Another basic feature that every other cell phone has.

A landscape keyboard - It works when using the Web browser, so why not when composing a message or e-mail? There is an app that brings this functionality, but we don't think that we should have to pay extra to get it--even if it is 99 cents.

Voice dialing/speed dialing - We know there are apps, but why should you have to pay for functionality that almost every other cell phones has? Sneaky Apple.

Real time turn-by-turn directions - This may take a new iPhone, but we're going to throw it in here anyway.

Task manager/background processing - CNET readers have been divided on this feature, but we'd like the ability to toggle between running applications.

Video recording/more camera options - Yet another feature many basic phones offer. And here again, we don't think that an app cuts it. We'd also like to have more creative control within the camera though options like a digital zoom, a self-timer and a brightness meter.

Full search - We'd like this for e-mails, calendar items and contacts all in one convenient place. There are a few apps that bring partial search, but Apple's SDK currently prohibits apps with calendar searching.

Send appointments to contacts - While we're on the calendar, we shouldn't have to wait until we're back on our computer to send meeting invites. What more, we'd like to forward contacts as well.

Weekly calendar view - This is a small point, but it's one worth mentioning.

Resend option for text messaging - As reader michaels1715 said, "Sometimes I want to repeat myself, but I don't want to have to type it all over again!"

File transfer/mass storage - If you don't buy an app, you can only transfer files to the iPhone using iTunes. Of course, that makes it impossible to transfer third-party files or use the handset as a mass storage device.

More Bluetooth profiles - Stereo Bluetooth may not have the best sound quality, but why not offer the choice of using it. Apple could always make more cash by building a stereo Bluetooth headset. And while we're at it, a Bluetooth file transfer profile would be welcome.

Flash support - Just a thought.

Palm did show off some new apps running on the Pre, however. One such program was the mobile version of the movie ticket site Fandango. On the Pre, you'll be able to view movie trailers, view show times, and buy tickets through the Fandango app. In addition, when you purchase tickets, an appointment will be added to your Calendar to remind about the show. While it took a little while to load, the quality of the video trailers was quite good.

Doh ! One of many things the iPhone can`t do.
The Pre also automatically turns on speaker phone if you are wireless charging on the TouchStone charger if you accept a call. The iPhone people need to go back to square one.

What I want in the new OS on my iPhone 3G is to have color-coded calendar events. I hate when I pull up my calendar and all I see on my month's schedule is black dots. Well what is a black dot? It means that there is an event that day. Well what type of event? I have no idea... This is why apple should add color coded events. What if I could mark work with green, parties with orange, class with blue, a date with pink, and have multiple colored dots on a date!!! I have to use my calendar for all these things and more. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to do either...

Actually, this is available, if you sync your iPhone with a Mac. All of your different calendars in iCal show up as different colored events. I don't see Apple changing this one up; if you want it, go buy yourself a Mac.

Why would I want to buy a Mac to take advantage of an iPhone feature that is lacking for the other 90% of the desktop users.

If Apple want to play with the big boys than it has got to get off it's Mobile Me & Mac only features for the iPhone.

By the way. 3.0 only catches the iPhone up with features that should have been in the 1st iPhone.
I got ripped off when I upgraded to 3G iPhone with all of Apples promises they didn't meet with the current model.

Apple sucks now and I'm waiting on the Pre.

I think that the iPhone should also have a button to cancel a text message in the middle of sending it in the case that you notice a typo while it is trying to send. another feature that almost every other phone has.

Please add this feature... or even add a spell check to the email and/or txtn feature.

why an iPhone if you can have Pre with so many things that aren't there on iphone even when OS3 is out and so many things better.... and you dont have to wait for someone to develop app for basic features and pay for them.... only if you're a gamer you like iphone more...

So true.

Apple makes you pay for what should be BASIC INSTLALLED FEATURES.

OK, they don't make you pay for them, but if you want your phone to match the features of a 2001 phone (still lacking true voice dialing) then you have to pay for it.

Isn't that Apples users complaint against Windows. They get everything they need from the OS without having to pay for the extras.

It's a phone, give me basic phone functions for 2009 for FREE & Built into the OS.

maybe they have, but I haven't seen anything. Hopefully they will add some better ways to seperate mail accounts. multiple icons would be great! nothing like a couple of buddies getting into an email chat and running up the email count, then I pick up my phone and panic thinking I am getting a lot of work emails. Also it is such a pain to go in and out of folders with multiple accounts. there has got to be a better way!

I don't see why they called the iPhone Internet in your pocket because sometimes I couldn't even open some websites because of adobe and flash player support, I hate it when it does that to me is like a half of my money is wasting. The iphone could be a huge device but unfortunately the have a lot of things to fix up on that device, I can't even copy a text or something to paste it somewhere else. I had blackberry curve before I left it for the iPhone but the simple/basic service my blackberry curve used to give me the iPhone doesn't. I wish I could speak to the inventor to explain that to him, because if he can create this nice device the rest thing to do it pretty much nothing . I love it please make me love it more than love. Thanks...

I think it has to do with the area/region you are in. In Indianapolis I get great reception and no dropped calls. My brother has been with Sprint for a few years and has had problems with dropped calls quite a bit. As I said it depends on the area in which you live.
