Given the grim financial condition of the auto industry, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week has been, by many accounts, a relatively somber affair.

At the same time, the industry appears to be on the brink of major technological change: many automakers this week announced plans to introduce electric cars of various types in the next two years.

Toyota plans to introduce an all-electric car in 2012, but it said its primary technology will be the gas-electric hybrid, used in the iconic Prius and now some Lexus models.

At the auto show, it introduced the next version of the Prius, which is designed to drive more than 50 miles per gallon and have an option for a solar panel on the roof to charge some of the onboard electronics.

Honda, meanwhile, is relaunching its own challenger, the Honda Insight, which is now a five-door sedan that will be available in April.

CNET Car Tech blog writer Wayne Cunningham is at the conference, where he filed this photo gallery of the two cars. Check out CNET's complete coverage of the Detroit auto show.

Why do so many of these hybrids/electics have this "i'm from San Fransisco" look? [CNET editors' note: Offensive content deleted.]

Trying to make them fuel efficient. Also, Honda tried with their hybrid Civic but it seems that people want to be easily id'd as hybrid drivers.

@ sythara, what would you suggest then? These are small cars with small wheel bases -- and they are definitely not built by Tesla Motors. They have to be aerodynamic, and without looking like a VW, there really isn't much option...

It astounds me that no automaker is mating a diesel engine to a hybrid. VW diesel engines are 50 state certified. Diesel is our way forward.

Isn't that the general concept behind trains these days? Pretty darn efficient (for the mass it hauls) overall.

VW already has non-hybrid diesel cars that obtain more than 50 mpg. I would think combining that engine (or each manufacturers' equivalent) with hybrid technology would deliver 75+ mpg. Probably the only thing holding them back is the diesel costs more per gallon in the U.S., so the impression of overall fuel savings might not be marketable.

The author's titles to this article: "Hybrid shoot-out: Honda Insight vs. Toyota Prius" suggests a more thorough
comparison to the two automakers hybrid/electric offerings at the auto show. As far as I can tell,
this article merely restates known facts, and doesn't go into detail comparing the cars.

Did you get paid for writing two paragraphs worth of info or did the rest of the article just vanish?

This new Prius looks great! Only wish it could go retail sooner. The upcoming Insight is also a huge look improvement over the existing version. Good work I'd say and hopefully they will attract much more consumers. But I'd like to see some specs.
