HDTV price drops: Black Friday comes early, stays late

Black Friday is still 11 days away, but for TV manufacturers looking to jump-start sluggish sales in the midst of a recession, it's already here--and will likely continue in spirit right through the holiday season.

Word of current and impending HDTV price drops is spreading rapidly. The HDGuru reports, for example, that Sony, Samsung, and Mitsubishi are rolling out MSRP reductions across the board, with some cuts as high as $500 on expensive models like the Sony KDL-52XBR6. Samsung is offering $200 off rear-projection models like the HL61A750, which was already a solid value to begin with. Looking for hot-selling prices last Friday, the Guru found deals like the 42-inch Panasonic TH-42PX80U plasma for $649 (although when we checked Monday it was back up to $729 online--still a great deal).

Looking for more? The latest Black Friday price watch (PDF) over at TWICE includes advertised price drops that range from 11 percent for the Sony KDL-46Z4100 to a drastic 33 percent for the LG 32LG30--one of the best deals we've seen so far at $549 at Best Buy. When we saw that price, we immediately added the LG to our Best cheap LCD TVs list.

We suspect even better bargains are yet to come. In past years, the best deals were available after Black Friday, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, especially on name-brand TVs.

The combination of the holiday season, nosediving economy and the impending DTV transition may be creating a perfect storm of low HDTV prices, but are people actually buying new TVs as a result? So far the answer seems to be "no." Growth in shipments of LCD and plasma TVs are finally beginning to decline, showing the slowest rate by far in the past two years. As economic news worsens, it's anybody's guess whether the American public, historically hot to drop cash for HDTVs during the holidays, will choose to wait instead this year.

What do you think, American public? Are these deals too good to pass up, or are you going to wait out the storm? Sound off in comments.

I think I found a great deal already when last week from amazon i got a the 46 in. Samsung 650 and a Samsung blu ray player for a little over $1500 w/ free shipping and no tax. I just couldn't pass it up after seeing the black friday ad postings on what BB and CC had to offer and being disappointed.

I was waiting for Sharp's LC42D65U to come down in price some more, but it's remained overpriced like the Sony HDTV's so I went ahead and picked up a Panasonic TC-37LZ85 for $680 last night during a family and friends sale. Likewise, I'd expect most of the public to focus on HDTV's that are south of $1,000 due to the uncertain job market in particular. I don't think HDTV's or Blu-ray or any of that is going to save Q4 of this year. Retailers will be lucky to break even with last year I think. The perception is that we need to pinch pennies and avoid credit. Whether or not that's reality is irrelevant, unless some really hot deals start showing up.

With the economy going so bad and the market swinging so wildly, I will wait for some good news before spending on usual "Not a Necessity" stuff.

Ive been keeping an eye on all these sales and have been in the market for a 46" or so for the last 6 months but dont NEED one, just would be nice, and I can afford it even with the economy but I am still seeing better deals on Amazon than any of these Black Friday deals so until they really start dropping im just gonna hang tight. My hope is the day after Christmas sales could be better.

I read an article a couple of days ago that makes this very exact point about Black Friday at
http://www.uberi.com
under the heading "What About Black Friday"

We are all trying to make do and get as much as possible for each dollar spent. Lately my family and I have been doing more research before buying anything, and have also done more online shopping and looked harder for better deals.

The lowered prices are the catalyst to my beginning to research what I 'd like to get. Purchase is down the road a little bit.

If you want a relatively cheap Flatscreen HDTV around 42-46 inches; should I go with Plasma or LCD? What's the difference?

We just bought ours Saturday. Circuit City is closing out in Atlanta, but Brandsmart quoted us a price hundreds below Circuit City's closeout price.

I don't think they can maneuver much lower this season, they were hundreds below Best Buy's sale price too, so we pulled the trigger.

52" 120 Hz Samsung 630 LCD for two grand.

Actually the Samsung LN52A630 is only $1890 at Amazon.com

I'd love to jump on some Black Friday deals, but I don't have the will, patience or interest to wait in line overnight or longer in the cold at Best Buy or what have you. I'm looking for a deal, but like hell if I'm that desperate for one.

The real disappointment is the lack of good deals on (decent) blu ray players. Retailers are missing out on something most folks don't have, would buy for a good price (>$150?) and would continue to create revenue off of disc sales.
