Dear Jay Leno: Embrace eBay auctions, don't kill them

Times are tough in Detroit. Many citizens of the city are struggling to find ways to keep their homes and find steady work. It couldn't get much worse.

But thanks to Jay Leno and eBay joining forces, it actually has gotten worse.

Jay Leno is planning a free stand-up comedy show for struggling Detroit residents. The tickets were made available Monday morning. By Monday night, Leno noticed that some of the tickets he gave away were on sale on eBay for "eight hundred something dollars," he said.

During his television monologue Monday night, Leno told viewers about the situation and explained that "you're out of your mind to pay $800 to see me." And then he asked eBay to cease all ticket sales for his live show. "I would like to ask the people at eBay to take the tickets down," he said. "There's nothing for sale here. It's just totally free."

By Tuesday, all instances of the sale were down from eBay. According to the company, Leno's request to have the tickets removed falls under its "Authorized Resellers Only" policy, so all would-be sellers were banned from selling tickets to the events.

The only thing saving eBay is no competition

by Don Reisinger

There once was a day when the great eBay commanded respect and considerable power in the world of tech. Since then, the company has been relegated to a mere shadow of its former self that's barely hanging on to a shred of relevance. And the only reason for that is the company's lack of competition.

Let's face it -- eBay is nothing more than an outdated, bloated company that lost its way years ago. And with the news coming off the wire today that suggests eBay is restructuring its worldwide operations and cutting jobs, things don't look too good for this ill-fated firm.

Of course, the company doesn't see it the way I do. Instead, a company spokeswoman claims this news is a "globalization and centralization effort" to ensure it's more prepared to enter the Web 2.0 fray.

But I have some news for eBay -- unless some major changes are instituted, the end may be near.

Perfect for Any Garage: The Jet-Engine Go-Cart

Engine-Powered Go-Cart

The Best Go-Cart Ever

(Credit: TechEBlog)

As I sit here and consider how I should begin telling you about this wonderful piece of machinery, I first wonder just how great it would be to see this sucker sitting in my garage. Imagine the rush you feel in knowing that you own the fastest go-cart in the world. Not bad, if I should say so myself.

The go-cart not only features a gas turbine engine that you would find in a US Navy A7 Corsair carrier aircraft, it spews some pretty serious afterburn. With a press of the fuel injection button, followed by the ignition button, the cart will create extra thrust, fire and smoke.

Besides speed, the go-cart offers a 24v starting unit and digital instrumentation, while sitting very low to the ground.

So far the eBay bid has not seen any action so you might be able to stick this cart in your garage at a pretty reasonable price.
