Finally, the moment all T-Mobile G1 owners have been waiting for! T-Mobile announced on Wednesday that it will start rolling out the official Android 1.5 (aka "Cupcake") update to G1 users starting at the end of next week. The update will be delivered over the air in random batches over the next several weeks, and T-Mobile expects to reach all G1 customers by the end of May.

Android 1.5 will bring a number of user interface improvements, better performance, as well as new features, such as an onscreen full QWERTY keyboard, video recording and playback, and stereo Bluetooth support. For a full list of features and an FAQ, check out T-Mobile's forum page.

We're anxiously awaiting our own Cupcake, and we'll update our full review of the T-Mobile G1 soon after. G1 owners, once you receive your Android 1.5 update, we'd also love to hear about your experiences as well. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts about the news below.

T-mobile trying to control G1 too much it make me like Iphone.
Iphone never stuck g1 is slow also i can install cydia on iphone, if g1 is open source they why charge $25 to put a app on g1, why i cant install open source software G1 one sucks.
iPHONE IS 1000 TIMES better.

That the software in the phone is open source it do not mean that the apps for it are. Developers aree fre to share what they feel is appropiate. On the other hand T-Mobile is trying to control android more than is suppose to and that is something I won't take. Also cupcake update was supposed to hit g1 in late 08 then jan 09 then the jump to april and now it will only go on batches all the way to the end of the month. Very disaponited on how T-Mobile is doing the OTA updates.

God u people have no faith! Awaisqarni, why r u commenting here? No one wants to here that noise, especially G1 users. If I wanted an Iphone I would got get one, not talk about it. Get outta here, you woman!

Interesting commentary. I happen to like women. What is your objection to them? Don't get me wrong, I have no objection to your lifestyle......just wondering about your dislike for the gender.

Your math seems to be off in the respect that all your arguments are based on the nonsense that you seem to be extracting from thin air.

"Open Source" and "Free Marketplace" Is a concept you thould invest time in defining. It might make you seem a little less uninformed and trollish.

Just a thought.

Just a small disclaimer to begin with. I own a iPhone, i bought it just as the 2G's dropped in price the first time. I also own a G1 that i got in late October or early November.

First, my G1 has *NEVER* been stuck and it's managed to crash requiring a reboot *A LOT* less than my iPhone.

As far as the charging $25 to get a developer account. That's to weed out a lot of the idiots who would make nothing but 6 billion fart apps or a malicious app and Google would have no way of tracking them down. I personally think it's a good deterrent against stupidity. Also, they don't charge $25 to put an app on the G1, they charge $25 to put an app on the Market. You can still write your app and release a .apk file for free.

As far as no open-source software...The G1 is based on linux, but it's a PHONE...Do you have any idea how slow OpenOffice or something written for Desktop Linux would be on a PHONE? Although, if you really want linux apps on your G1, there are Ubuntu images you can put on your microSD card that the phone can boot to and it's normal Ubuntu with a GUI and stuff.

Personally...I hate haters like this. If you like your iPhone, go back to being a fanboy and leave the intelligent G1 community alone.

i dont know why you people reply to this comment when is clear that this guy or girl cant even compel to write a good paragraph about their beloved iphone. seriously i wouldnt bother,

My G1 is fabulous, and my boyfriend was bummed when he saw my G1 operate faster than his I phone!!!!
by nrl1 June 5, 2009 10:22 AM PDT
The cost of developing apps on Android is way cheaper than developing on the iPhone. First off, you can't build a legal iPhone app unless you build it on a Mac (lame). Second off, you have to learn Apple's proprietary Objective-C language, which is pretty much only used within Apple (lame). And since you make such a big point of the cost to join the Android development community ($25), why don't you point out how it is $99 to join the iPhone developer program. Idiot...

"Better Performance"? The phone already performs wonderfully.......for 60 minutes. Then it is time to recharge.

If you have gps, wifi, and are multitasking like a demon: I can see how 10-12 hours usage would be frustrating.

I get a good day of moderate usage with a free power saving app i downloaded from the marketplace.

Try keeping wifi and gps disabled and make sure apps aren't constantly running in the background.
Or you can just complain to T-Mobile and have them send out a replacement battery. ;) tee hee
by make_or_break May 11, 2009 10:10 AM PDT
I typically leave GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth off...and still my G1 drains the battery within 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. 3G access just eats up the charge on my G1. Just wish T-Mo would hurry up with that official Cupcake push so I can see if the early claims about improved battery performance are indeed true.

May 6th 2009- So I called T-Mobile today and they told me that definitely the end of next week they are rolling out the (cupcake 1.5) update to the US. They told me that everyone with a G-1 will have the update by the end of May!!! I can't wait yaaaa

I received the OTA update for my G1 today in the UK.

My phone is now screwed.

I have the video player and slightly revised look to the OS, but using the browser causes errors and loading the market place gives me a message saying my wireless account isn't allowed to use the app.

Hope you all have better luck...

I'm a UK based (London) G1 user and i received the update this morning, and i must say BRILLIANT!!! Added camcorder although haven't had much time to try it out. Not expecting much as the camera isn't that great any way. A few nice little changes to the general user interface and at last an on-screen keyboard for replying to short messages. One thing i really like is the Auto-Orientation although you have to turn this on in the settings menu. When turning the phone on it's side, the auto orientation is no where near as quick and smooth as the iPhone, but works none the less. Nice changes to the browser interface and a button that takes you straight back to original size when you've zoomed in. You guys will love it!

Thank you so much, that flip orientation is awesome. So many times I would forget I was on my G1 and not my I touch and try to flip it...

I was anxious to see the cupcake release and very frustrated but now that its all said and done, Im glad they waited until the cupcake was baked rather than toss us more crap. The release is either ready or its not. Obviously until this month, it wasn't. No one was holding it from us to **** us off.

I think people need to come to terms with the fact that the G1 is the FIRST phone to use the android os. I sure sisnt think it was gonna be perfect right outta the box, nothing that is great ever is! I think the fact that google and tmobile are working to keep making this os better shows their dedication and we need to lay of and let them work. If you cant wait then go get the iphone, but give android a year or so to perfect what they are going for and apple is going to be in trouble. Android just has to many avenues of attack where apple is limited to a one track mind, i think when the G2 is released on a sleeker phone people will begin to realize how powerful android really is.

Can CNET please run an article relating to Android's inability to save apps to an SD card? Lack of internal storage on the G1 is a major issue that has hampered app sales and prevented developers from bringing feature rich products to the Market.

Google has neglected its users in this regard. Please don't do the same by not pointing this out. Thanks.

Agreed! My first and still only "real" complaint about my G1 is the lack of memory for apps, including the inability to save them to the SD card. I guess I can understand idiots in this world not understanding why their app went away when they switched out their SD card, but seriously, I should not have to pick and choose between "essential and non-essential" apps that are still great when I have quite a bit of my 8 gb SD card empty. Otherwise it is my absolute favorite thing I own... by FAR (aside from my dog).

Just got 1.5 update works really well. Lots of new things take a photo and share by mail, mms or upload automaticaly to picassa. Sign into your Picassa account look in drop box there it is.
Combined search and go in browser.
Obviously on screen keyboard but works with apps installed that need a keyboard but you will need to update your apps to make it work.
Default settings need changing to make auto rotate and other features work.
Fixed bug so that if in UK Google maps now show miles.
On screen zoom + and - as well as magnify box.
Widgets some pre loaded some in market place hold on blank part of screen to access.
Folders put a folder on screen add your apps to give more space on screen open folder to rename hold on title bar onscreen keyboard opens.
Sometims on screen keyboard obscures part of screen you are looking at just scroll down with trackball.
Video recording has its own icon but you can switch between video and camera from either hrough menu.
No more holding camera button on screen button for taking pictures or video.
What else new gallery, improved contacts and call history, google talk.
Probably lots more as always with G1 check menu options and tap and hold to find all the features.
I always liked he G1 as it was fairly seamless in the way it worked this update makes it exactly what it should be just need flash player andit will be perfect.

Just found another cool thing hold on blank part of screen add to home screen menu opens you can add shortcuts, widgets, folders and wallpaper. The fun thing is if you open shortcuts you can add anything from menu to home screen. open shortcuts open contacts choose contact your contact is added to home screen so you could have a screen as a speed dial screen. Add applications two taps brings up scroll listt of all apps much easier to find if you have lots of apps

I know too many G1 users to count ... most have no clue, nor care about the update. They think the phone is great as is ... I care, but what's the point in sweating it? After all I'm an early adopter and plan on the necessity of a hardware update in the very near future anyway. I kind of knew I was buying a not-for-prime-time device when I got it. The 1.5 update may ultimately be the end of the road for many critical future developments that will require improved hardware to run. I've never been a huge HTC fan. I'm very interested to see which companies choose to develop Android capable hardware so I have a choice in the matter.

Waiting patiently for my update. chrismuk66, thank you for the 1.5 OTA Update feature review.

(US User) I've "tested" a version of android 1.5 I installed on my Tmobile G1 using this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC-T1Yf4m4s for HTC Magic.

I heard it's very similar, if not exactly the same, as the real 1.5 that's coming this week in the U.S. The onscreen keyboard requires more keystrokes to enter national characters than the physical keyboard. So it would be ideal to keep both the physical and onscreen keyboards at the same time.
Also some of the apps I've acquired while in android 1.1 stopped working. So I decided to return my G1's state back to Android 1.1 and wait for the official 1.5 update for the HTC Dream from TMobile instead.

Also today, May 12, '09, I received notices of 1.5 version updates for some of the apps (actually just 2: power manager and imeem). I still have other apps that I know did not work during my 1.5 test and did not receive any update notifications. I hope this will not be an issue when the 1.5 rolls out.

Also, even if 1.5 comes out, I'd still look forward to the day when flash is built-in to the browser.

I also heard that the upcoming 1.5 cupcake update will make it faster for the GPS to locate the user using Google Maps as well as better voice search capabiility.

i got the cupcake update, the browser map and overall interface is a lot faster. The sound for video recording is a little quiet, but the update makes the phone so much better. its like i got a different phone. it now clearly exceeds the iphone.

I have been a G1 owner for @ 6 months now, and I must tell you that overall I am satisfied with the phone. I do like all the new features of the phone with this latest patch. I am however upset that they did not fix the voice dial software to be more like that of the Blackberry line. To use handsfree on this phone sucks. Why would it even include voice recognition if it requiers you to touch select the appropriate name on voice dial. The need to touch the phone defeats the hands free purpose. I am giving the G1 to my wife who has no use for voice dial and going with the Storm. I would just buy a G1, but the issue affects me badly as I am constantly on the go with my work and having to look down to dial. Who wants to look down at 70-80 mph? Some may, but then again we always need organ donors.

I got the cupcake update and now my email won't work. G-mail works just fine, but the POP/SMTP application that I set up to get to my other accounts crashes as soon as I open it. It's a standard app and not one I downloaded from the marketplace, so I am afraid to get rid of it and try to reinstall. I'm going to go to the T-mobile forum to see if I can get assistance, but I thought I would post here too. Anyone else having this problem?
