Top 5 most popular products for December

by Tom Merritt

We're headed into the holidays and it's time to count down the products you seem to like the most, as determined by your page views on CNET.com.

And, of course, there is a lame prize as usual. So watch the show, then come back here and post your trivia question answer below. We'll choose one of the the first 10 correct posters to win the Star Wars Episode 1 Electronic CommTech Reader.

The answer to the lame prize question from last week's tech turkeys countdown was: Meet Me Tour.

Top 5 tech turkeys

by Tom Merritt

It's Thanksgiving time in the U.S., which means we all sit down to a meal of turkey and a bunch of fattening side dishes and then pretend to watch football while we nap. At least that's the stereotype. However much truth it holds doesn't concern me, however. All I care about is that I have an excuse to play on the word turkey and do a top 5 about some of the worst tech of the year.

So watch the show, bask in the turkeyness of some of this year's tech, then come back here and enter a comment either complaining how I bashed your favorite product, or answering the lame prize question.

Answer to last week's question: Beyerdynamic DT 48

Top 5 best products of the fall

by Tom Merritt

No, no, no. This isn't some Dan Brown-inspired homage to products attributed to Lucifer or some such crazy thing. We mean autumn. You know, when the leaves change. We went through all the reviews we did over the past three months and ordered them by rating. So these are the best products we've reviewed so far this fall.

And as usual there's a prize. A lame prize. And you can win it by watching the video, then coming back to this blog post and answering the question in the comments below. Be one of the first 10 to answer correctly, and you could be randomly chosen to win.

Last week's answer: HTC Dream T-Mobile G1

Top 5 most popular products for November

by Tom Merritt

We're getting close to the holidays and we know you're starting to make your wish lists. So we're treating this month's most popular products list as a request. You're spending a lot of your time viewing these products. We get it. Feel free to send this video around to friends and family as a hint.

And while we're at it, let's give you something. Well, one of you. Go watch the video, answer the trivia question, and come back here and post your guess. It could light up your holidays. Literally.

The answer to last week's question was: The GNU Project.

Special hint. If you have a bogus e-mail address in your account, you won't win because you'll never get the e-mail. Just a thought.

Top 5 most popular products for October

by Tom Merritt

The old most popular list is really coming back into its own these days. For a while there I thought it would be all phones forever. But it's two months running with only two phones on the list. I guess most of you all finally picked a phone and are moving on to better TVs, Netbooks, etc.

So watch in good health this week and then come back to this blog post and take a crack at answering the trivia question for a chance at winning the lame prize.

Top 5 best products of the summer

by Tom Merritt

Once again on this edition of the Top 5 video, we count down the highest-rated products of the past three months. Watch to find out which of the blistering summer releases was rated the highest by CNET editors. There's some stiff competition out there, and some big surprises.

Also remember to post an answer to the trivia question below for a chance to win the retro CNET thumb drive.--so retro it's less than a gigabyte in capacity. It is called "lame prize" after all.

Update: Many below have guessed "Sony PS3 Slim" as the correct answer to the trivia question. The Sony PS3 Slim was not out at the recording of this show, so it was not the "number 6" and not the answer I had in mind. The correct answer still ranks number 6, even if the Slim had been out, because it's user ranking is higher than the Slim's right this second. So keep guessing.

The 404 406: Where we're finally getting a price drop

by Justin Yu

The Sony PlayStation is finally getting a price drop, but some dummy retailers in Europe are actually increasing the price of the Xbox Arcade console set. In other news, a Twitter user is offering his followers a line to God, Starbucks says OK to freeloaders, and we also debate the most prolific technology of our time! You'll never guess what Wilson has up his sleeve...

It's a washing machine.

(Credit: First-Act)

In case you haven't heard, our economy is in a little bit of hot water right now, and while most companies like Sony are slashing prices to keep up with the competition, the geniuses at Microsoft EU are actually increasing the price of the Xbox Arcade from £129.99 to £159.99. Furthermore, the five Xbox Live Arcade games will no longer be included in the bundle. The company's excuse is that it is to "counteract the poor pound-to-euro currency exchange rate." Who allowed this to happen at Microsoft? At least fix the failure rate before you increase the price!

In other news, Starbucks is opening its doors to Wi-Fi freeloaders. We reported in the past that several cafes in New York are banning cell phones and laptops, cutting off Wi-Fi access to discourage freeloaders from just hanging out and surfing the Web for free. Starbucks has always been an easy place to gain paid access to the Internet, and it will continue to provide a welcoming environment for customers to enjoy their $68 cups of flavored coffee.

Many more stories to get to today, including a Twitter account that gives followers a direct line to God and a hilarious poem from our buddy CHRISTOPHER WALKEN!

Top 5 ugliest tech products

by Tom Merritt

Get ready for an eyeful of ugly this week.

We count down the worst-looking tech products, as judged by an impartial panel of me and a bunch of people on Twitter and Facebook.

And, as usual, there is a lame prize. One of the lamer ones, actually. Something called CubeGuard. Well, it's all yours if you're one of the first 10 people to post an answer correctly in the comments.

Oh, and by the way, make sure your registered e-mail address is correct, or I can't contact you about where to send the prize!

Report: Apple shot ad for new product in diner

by David Carnoy

Secretive company shoots secretive ad for secretive product that probably doesn't look like this.

(Credit: http://artilleryunit.com)

The Sierra Sun has an interesting tidbit of information that some blogs have picked up: Apple is apparently shooting an ad for a new, unreleased product in Truckee, Calif., which is near Lake Tahoe and good skiing during the winter.

Reportedly, the ad was being shot at a diner called "Jax at the Tracks." (We haven't been able to confirm whether Apple really was filming in the diner, but it does exist). The Sun reports that "because the product they were advertising hadn't been released, members of the group didn't release any information, or allow any photographs."

Bud Haley, owner of the dinner, told the newspaper that, "Apple found us, they're trying to show us as a hip and cool spot for the 20-something crowd."

So tantalizing, isn't it? "Hip," "cool," "20-something." I think I just inhaled an aphrodisiac.

Got a mock script you're willing to share?
